I carry winchester 165 ranger SXT's. I just recently picked up a couple boxes of 165 grn HST's and will be switching over to them eventually.

I shoot 165 grain fmj for target winchester white box. I carry 165 grain golden saber. My M & P 40 seems to like 165 more so the 180 it may be recoil it may be bullet weight. My groupd tightened up when I switched. The golden saber seem to shoot right into the target round groups. I do want to try some hornady critical defense sometime as well.

One thing to keep in mind...while a lighter bullet will have more velocity and energy a heavier bullet should still penetrate farther into the target.
I have shot nearly every major brand of FMJ and JHP ammo in 165 and 180 grain.

Hands Down I find the 180 grain rounds to have less recoil and to be less "snappy".

I now target shoot with 180, and carry 180 for that reason.

Like I said in my first post - I had to look this up since I don't have first hand experience with a .40 Cal, so I'm just going off of info from the web.

Yep, the 7.62 (.308) has nearly double the energy than the 5.56 (.223), which is why I like it over the 5.56.

No two shots are going to be equal , and performance wont be the same as it is in water.....But for someone on a budget this is a good baseline....and gives all bullets the same test. A hollow point should perfrom its best going thru water. So in my mind these results are the best you can get and all bullets are compared evenly.

Have you ever tried the test with bars of soap? It really gives you a better example of expansion without having such a destructive effect on the ammo. Dollar store special!...lol

I have never seen the need for the .40S&W. I don't own a firearm in that chambering.

Its not really a need, but to have .45acp energy levels in a 9mm sized pistol. If I had a 9mm or a .45 I wouldnt feel the need to replace it. If I didnt already have one of those calibers to share ammo with then I would surely consider it as much as any other caliber, and more then most.
Just a quick look at double tap ammo sight shows these averages.
    9mm+p 450lb of energy 4" barrel
    .40s&W 550lb of energy 4" barrel
    .45acp 520lb of energy 5" barrel
    10mm 760lb of energy 4" barrel
Like I said I wouldnt trade a .45 or a 9mm in on a .40.....but if I was shopping for my first new pistol it would be a .40.
