It has been *years* since I've read Pendleton. I don't recall this one...

Clips hold ammo. Magazines are what you read at the barber shop. Perhaps it's because I trained with both the M1 and M14, but clip/magazine are interchangeable as far as I'm concerned. Pistachio shells are just shells, but brass that once held powder and a projectile is a shell casing.

Please post an illustration of a shell casing. I do not know what an encased shell looks like.

I see a photo of a spent shell. Where's the casing?

I know what a shell looks like (many variations of them, BTW). But have never seen a casing. Is it the box they come in?

Some rounds have a recessed bullet, so one can't say if the picture is an empty shell or not. Due to the tarnish or dirt it is likely expended.

To me, a clip can hold rounds, but not in an enclosed state (normally) and they are used to "strip" the rounds into a fixed or detachable magazine. A magazine was a place powder, any casings and shells are stored until ready for use. Then, the round is moved "into battery" to be fired. A lot is borrowed from artillery or did arty borrow from ancient firearms?
