S&W Model 38 Airweight
Calling out to S&W guru's. I was doing my usual nightly cruising around looking for deals and came across this S&W model 38 airweight. Seller was honest, said it is two tone and appears that the frame must have been stripped ? He struggled to describe shrouded hammer so didn't know much about them obviously. Price was cheap, and looked in good shape so I started looking around a bit before considering. I found that they were made blued, nickel and two tone - but two tone I read said Blued gun with nickel cylinder. I continued to look around and stumbled across another two tone exactly like this one for sale, so I started to think it might be original ? Either that or folks liked stripping the finish off these guns - lol. And on an airweight can the finish be stripped off like this ? The other one I saw had the exact same blue locations and nickel ( blue barrel, cylinder, crane ). The S&W logo isn't faded like it looks in this picture, it's just the light/angle - another close up shows it's pretty crisp. Any thoughts ? I bought it of course - price was right imo.

Re: S&W Model 38 Airweight
I have the same "hump back" model - one of my favorite carry guns. It is the aluminum frame with a steel cylinder and barrel. The clear coat on the aluminum frame comes off pretty easy - looks almost like chipping nail polish... A good portion of mine has come off from sweat and carry wear, and in the spots where it starts you can scrape it off with your fingernail. Mine has a desantis clipgrip which provides a deep carry position in your waistband making for very secure carry with just the tip of the grip sticking out.

Re: S&W Model 38 Airweight
Looks nice. Is it a model marked piece (under the yoke) - the flat latch & diamond grips lead me to ask. My guess is that it is not original. The SCSW (4th Edition) notes some pinto 38's were made but they were blued frames with nickel cylinders. Other than the undocumented color combination the refinished trigger also leads me to that conclusion - trigger should be case hardened. Also it looks like an insert in the front sight was added - also not OE. But the one thing I've learned, when it comes to S&W's, is never say never. Nice gun regardless.

Re: S&W Model 38 Airweight
Weird thing is there's another one exactly like it for sale on GB - right down to the blued vs. case colored trigger and the seller of that one is saying it is an "original bodyguard pre-38" ??!!
