Cleaning a rifle in view of neighbors...
I've recently escaped the socialist bounds of NJ and have begun to build my collection. However, I do have a question about the legality of cleaning my weapons on my deck and in view of neighbors and traffic... I enjoy smoking stogies so I would like to incorporate the two since the wife doesn't allow me to smoke inside. The only way I can do this is if I were to clean my rifles on my deck. Are there any laws that I would be breaking if I were to do this? Of course they would not be loaded. I know in NJ I'd have a SWAT team breaking down my door... I know it's different here but I guess I'm a little paranoid.

Re: Cleaning a rifle in view of neighbors...
I clean my shotgun on my front porch all the time. If my neighbor's see, they usually either come over to critique or to clean their own weapons and it becomes a hang out type situation.
I hate the critiquing, but enjoy the time spent with friends."When I hit it, I expect it to fall the hell down and die!"

It's your front porch/deck/whatever. Do it on the front lawn if you want. Do it wearing white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day.
Just don't lose any parts.

I do it all the time, keeps the a-hole neighbors away and I actually have a shooting buddy because of it, He came over, started talking and I found out he belongs to the same club and has about 15 rifles.

Ditto on the being paranoid after moving here from Jersey. It's been almost a year. I remember bringing long guns over from my parent's house and pulling the truck into the garage so my neighbors wouldn't see me bringing gun cases into the house.

Three suggestions.
1. Watch the solvent you use while smoking.
2. Clean guns naked on your porch.
3. Tell anyone with something to say to you "pound salt".Emergency Medicine prevents natural selection

"Cleaning your rifle" isn't a euphemism is it?
Rules are written in the stone,
Break the rules and you get no bones,
all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.
