Lamb could never have won a Democratic primary with his stated center-right positions. This model won't work for the Dems in regular elections.

Precisely. You could only get a candidate like Lamb in a special-election situation like this where the Dem party machine could hand-pick someone tailored for the district, AND without him getting beat up for his "DINO" conservative stances in the primary.

I don’t know how you spin this any other way but a pendulum swing back the other direction. Not good for Republicans. I also think the progressives/liberals.....not the neoliberal democratic machine but the Bernie Sanders types are looking at the field and thinking....well now..........

This race was Trump vs Hillary.

Of course the angry mobs of liberals are out voting.
If you thought that Democrats mobilized, drove buses of people to the polls, and voted from the grave in the past, you ain't going to believe how much they step up their efforts after the Trump victory.

I disagree. This race was more like Trump vs. Joe Donnelly e.g. - against someone at the far 'right edge' of the Democrats (at least in his statements and positions during the campaign).

I agree here, and I'm not disputing that even if Saccone pulls out a squeaker, the closeness of this election is NOT a good sign.

Yeah, the "Hillary" part isn't even relevant - this as a vote against Trump and anyone who isn't a democrat is "Trump".
And anyone who is "Trump" is a racist, horrible, woman-hater, so...

Yeah, it's going to be bad for a long time.

If that's all true, and yet it still comes down to "50/50" +/- a fraction for the winner in a district with far more registered Democrats than Republicans, I'm not sure it's that bad. Not to mention the 18th has flip-flopped party in every single election since 1971.

AND to do that, they had to run a candidate who's to the right of more than a few Republicans (at least his rhetoric) I could mention... a candidate that could never make it through a primary in a normal election.

So I don't LIKE it, but it doesn't feel like the dam breaking either.
