AK group shoot/ local training group
Due to a lot of people being interested in a get together, specific to the AK platform....here's a new thread to discuss the who, what, when and where.
It should be a good opportunity to learn some new drills, AK specific handling techniques, maybe try out other folks setup's, etc.
I think d90king and I are willing to help give the day some structure (running folks through drills, maybe presenting some new tips and techniques). Maybe other folks want to present some info, too!
But lets start hearing from who wants to come (Southern Chester County), what they want to work on, how many people we're talking about, what dates are do-able...
So yea, who's game?Last edited by synergy; August 15th, 2009 at 05:09 PM.

The topics covered will be as follows:
- Discussing the weaknesses of the platform
- Discussing the Strengths of the platform
- Safety and safe handling of the rifle
- Methods of utilizing the safety on the AK platform -- put simply it sucks. You will learn to use the method that is most comfortable for you to use under stress!
- Getting the rifle zeroed
- Proper stance and footing
- Reloads -- Both tactical and speed
- Malfunction clearance drills
- Slings
- Proper sight pics with the iron sights:
- Trigger control:
- Trigger control drills for pistol that help rifle shooting
- Transitioning to secondary weapon
- Shooting on the move
- Shooting prone
- Shooting on the clock
- Cleaning and trouble shooting your rifle
- Different optic setups that are available for the platform
- Shooting and proper following through with scan and assess
- Ammo
And any other things that people would like to discuss including things that they have found work best for them.
I do not consider my self an instructor in any way or even an "expert" as I still have much to learn. I am however willing to share with you my knowledge of the platform and methods I have been taught by Larry Vickers and others.Last edited by d90king; August 15th, 2009 at 06:21 PM.

Re: AK group shoot/ local training group
- Transitioning to secondary weapon
I'd delete this for the sake of safety. You guys don't know the skill level of the attendee's. I wouldn't include this unless everyone has already attended a three day pistol class.
- Shooting on the move
I would omit this is for safety reasons as well.
This is allot of material to cover in one day. If I were you I'd take the time between now and the day of the get together and distill it down to cover less content more thoroughly.

Re: AK group shoot/ local training group
I've had similar thoughts. Being a day shoot, it's gonna take folks a while to make it to the range, from wherever they're coming from.
I think we're gonna try and get a grasp of the number of people coming and try and feel out what people have done/ want to do...then put together an agenda and just do what we can to make it through it.
Being that we're all in day-tripping range...nothing says we can't schedule a "part II" down the road, too.
Thanks for the feedback...hints, tips, suggestions and emotional outbursts are all welcome.

Re: AK group shoot/ local training group
Tony this is not going to be a day of hardcore training. This will be a day to go over the fundamentals of the platform. It will be a lot, but not a lot of time will be spent on each area. Many of the stuff I will demo and the amount of people and skill level will dictate how far we go in each area.
My main goal will be to simply to give those attending things that they can take home with them and work on. My hope after that is that they will seek out further instruction from many of the great instructors out there. My hope is that this will be a good primer for further instruction.

Re: AK group shoot/ local training group
I'm all for a day of blasting with an AK.
Unfortunetly, all I got is a crappy Romanian with a crappy trigger that kicks me back, and a crappy buttstock that's intent on reforming the shape of my cheekbone.
Now if you have some suggestions on the cure for those ills.... (short of a burn barrel), I'm all ears."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." Thomas Jefferson
