If you want to defend yourself/family, it has to be buckshot. If you want to piss someone off, and attempt to scare them, then birdshot is the thing for you.

Pistol is my first choice simply due to feeling i have more control of the rounds...

Shotgun is the best choice for home defense easier to hit moving target with and short range or med range with you can also butt stroke them if they are close enough.

But dbl odd buck is probably best or maybe 4 shot for ducks. Slugs are definitely out the neighbors won't like it flying through there living room after it leave his body.

OK... moving around with a firearm that usually has an 18+ inch barrel, as opposed to a pistol or carbine with a 16" barrel (not for the pistol ), makes for a better weapon to defend ones self in one's home?

Great if it is all that you have, and probably better than a pistol, but not the best.
