Question Got a complex interstate travel question

I had a buddy ask me an interesting question today, and i don't know the answer. this is the situation he gave:

you decide to go to the jersey shore to hang out at the beach for a day. you know that NJ doesn't honor our LTCF (as far as i know), but you will be home after dark, and don't feel comfortable arriving at this hour without your sidearm.

WHAT DO YOU DO!? we're wondering how to legally bring the handgun with you, since you are stopping in NJ and not just "passing through".

Please note that neither he nor I intend to carry while in NJ, but only want to have it with us when returning home (again, possibly quite late)

Well... You could take your firearm with you, then, God forbid, if you need to use it on a bad guy the police can later arrest the bad guy and you.

I would not take it in Jersey period, ever.

About the only way you can legally take it into Jersey without merely "passing through" is if you were attending a competition.

Someone with more knowledge will chime in, but that's my understanding so far.

this is obviously an option, but we're trying to find one that allows the user to be in NJ

if you want to support regimes that trample the rights of those who live there, that's your choice

It is my understanding also that you cannot legally take it into Jersey, outside of being in a competition. You can take it, but if you are caught-look out.

The 1986 FOPA arguably allows interstate transportation if the gun is unloaded, and in the trunk or a secure container other than the glove box or console. it's not all that clear, though, and NJ/NY are both known for ignoring it.

But FOPA doesn't cover OP since the destination is the shore...correct?
