OMG, who needs those kinds of guns near a school, I'm glad the author threw that pertinent detail in.

I never realized that you could take a course in "science" after about the 4th grade, let along get a Ph.D. in it.

I'm going to stir the pot a bit on this one intentionally just to see what you all have to say.

Suppose, for the sake of argument, that this gentleman actually was wondering around naked and keeping his girlfriend restrained and not letting her go to the bathroom for days. These aren't the actions for a sane person.

Wouldn't it be entirely proper for the authorities to step in at this point? It would be completely analogous to being incarcerated for committing a crime. Yes we have individual rights, however, some of those rights are suspended or lost when you are imprisoned and for the term of your imprisonment. How, if the guy is proven to be batshit crazy, is it a bad thing that this guy is taken off the street and not allowed to pose a threat to the community?

Of course this all presupposes that the girlfriend isn't making up bogus charges because she is pissed at him much like happens with PFAs and divorce sometimes.

can atf revoke your tax stamp?

    also
The homeowner, who was naked, surrendered outside his home at about 4 a.m.
so? he was naked at 4 am. many people sleep in the nude and it is well documented that the police will not allow you to get dressed as part of their shock and awe program.

for the record i dont sleep in the nude. i tried it once but my johnson kept falling out of the bed and the dog would step on it.

I disagree. "Criminal acts"? Certainly. "Proof of insanity"? Not necessarily. There are plenty of perfectly sane, yet very evil people around.

    IMO.

Bomb making materials? I always love hearing that. So the guy has some bulk powder for reloading, some pipes in the garage left over from a plumbing project and a package of fuse that he just happened to buy at a gun show for giggles....

Who here doesn't have such things? I'm not saying that's his particular situation, but I bet there's a good many here that also have "bomb making materials" laying around.

There is very strict criteria to be involuntarily commited. The petitioner must prove that you are a harm to yourself, others or can no longer take care of yourself. No doctor will commit just for owning firearms and not agreeing with the government. It's also a two doctor process to 302 someone.

Police found about a dozen legally owned firearms inside the home, some of which matched the type held by the SWAT team outside, Ward said. Those firearms included a .308 caliber rifle
Holy Crap! He should really have had more than one of those.

and an M4 carbine, which is in the same family of weapon as the M-16, Ward said.
Clearly someone brought along their smartphone and wiki skills to this raid.

The man also possessed a "Tommy" gun, a . 357 handgun and a British cavalry saber, among other weapons, police said.
He's obviously nuts. Doesn't he know that he'd be better off with a 44 magnum and a samurai sword?

I'm in agreement with you on this. There are plenty of types of mental illness that don't pose a threat. However, with that said, to clarify what I said before, if proven to be mentally ill in a manner in which he was a threat to his girlfriend, or anyone else for that matter, how would it not be justifiable?
