Hanging a Deer
Like the title say, how do you guys go about hanging one? I have a sheetrock ceiling in my garage and I would like to see how you guys hang them so I can get an idea how I want to make something up. When I hunted before the garage has open rafter and we just tied them to it. But I would like to make something more permanent. Easy up, easy down is a plus.
Thanks.

Re: Hanging a Deer
How do you get one to stand still while you put the rope around his neck? I would imagine that shooting one is easier. Besides, building a platform with a trap door has to violate some local building code.

Re: Hanging a Deer
I use the gambrel system as well. It is really quick and easy. Just put a hook (capable of holding the weight) through the drywall and into a rafter. Then you can just hang the gambrel on the hook and it is quick and easy to pull down. You can also use a scale off of the hood to check weight.

Re: Hanging a Deer
I would get a stud finder to locate what wood ceiling supports you have.
I would then get a piece of angle iron ( 2 X 2 X 1/4") long enough to span at least 3 or 4 ceiling supports. Drill holes into the angle for multiple 3/8" X 3" lag screws that will secure the angle to the ceiling. Drill another hole into the angle for a small shackle.
Test it for weight. If the ceiling supports sag from weight ( they shouldn't but), you can use a vertical 2 X 4 or something to prevent the whole deal from coming down. The top of any vertical support ( if needed) should also be attached to the angle iron. Not sure if you have trusses or if it's stick built.
Just one way or build a swing style structure high enough that you know it's limitations or build it to suit ( not attached to the structure).Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

Go out on trash night or check craigslist ( just make sure your packin heat with all the loonies these days) for a cheap or free kids swingset. Works perfect, easy to dissasemble and throw in the corner for next time.

Re: Hanging a Deer
I use a gambrel and a Hang 'Em High Hoist, it is a pulley and ratchet system so that as you pull the deer up it locks in place and has another rope you pull to release it. I got mine at the outdoor show about six years ago, between myself and my friends it has been used at least thirty times. http://store.ultimatedeerhanger.com/...-high-hoi.html

Hock hooks from a rafter.. ...just watch out for the tarsal and metatarsal glands back there.
If you hang from the hocks - definitely use gloves to do it, then change your gloves AND wash your hands before continuing to butcher.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515
