Removing Stain From Wood Stock

This was my concern, that I couldn't "draw" the stain out. I was hoping that something like Citrus Strip might work.

i've brushed and wiped poly. i prefer a wet edge of a cloth or paper towel, brushes seem to introduce too many bubbles.
and patience, patience, patience. avoid color and poly in one can... thats garbage.

What they said, and a good China bristle brush at slow speeds is it only way to avoid bubbles. If using an older can that's thickened up a bit, you can thin it too, so any bubbles pop.

An update. Thanks to all for the advice.....gave me some direction and confidence in making an attempt.

I knew I had to sand some sanding scratches, etc out of at least the butt stock. As I may have mentioned before, it was ugly and shouldn't have left the factory the way it was. So, I started off with sanding to get it straight and remove the scratches. I was surprised that with some sanding, the color didn't change. I can only assume that it was never stained....but as the maker suggested...just done with linseed oil.

When I thought I was done sanding with 220, then 800....I wiped down with alcohol and liked the grain and color. I experimented with some Truoil and found that applying with a lint free bit of (in my case) blue paper towel, just enough to make the surface wet worked best. I don't know how many coats I put on, but probably about 10. Once this has all dried a few weeks, I may try some car wax or similar. As for now...I'm thrilled with the results. I also glass beaded and repainted the butt plate.

I'm posting a "before" and a couple of "after" pics....glad for your thoughts.

I'd also add that I found a very easy way to remove Truoil. Some of PPG's General Purpose solvent and a grey scotchbrite pad removed the Truoil with very little effort. A quick wipe-down with same on a clean cloth and the wood was clean. I use this solvent in the garage for a variety of uses...I expect its some sort of lacquer reducer.

I agree with everything you said, Bro. No matter how I tried I couldn't get that Polycoat junk to come out good

I have bleached several gun stocks with clorox.It does a good job too.Just put it on the stock right out of the bottle.When finished and have the stock to the color liked,wash stock good and apply some vinegar to the wood to stop the bleach action.Wash stock again and let dry.Good luck with it.
