    Handguns:
If you purchase a handgun from, or while, out of state, it must be shipped to an FFL in your state of residence for transfer. So the answer is moot for handguns since you won't be able to take possession of one out of state.
But other than your scenario, handguns can be shipped to yourself via common carrier(no USPS) as long as it is legal to possess the handgun in the state your receiving it in.

    Long guns.
These can be purchased out of state. They can be shipped to yourself in any state (again, providing they are legal to possess in the state). Long guns CAN be shipped USPS.

Flying with a firearm is cake...or it was for me anyway.

Call the airline and get their policy for travel with a firearm. Normally, it's just a matter of unloading and locking the action open, or locking the wheel open with a nylon tiestrap. Some require a quick inspection at the ticket counter to make sure that the lock is in place, and that there is no ammo in the same case as the firearm and that's it. That is all I ever experienced flying in and out of Philly, Atlanta, Pennsacola, Memphis, Indianapolis...

You can UPS/Fedex a gun to yourself. One of the catches is they only ship overnight and its generally best to be at the other end during delivery.

As for flying with guns. Its not as bad as you might think. Most airlines and airports are getting pretty familiar with the practice. Checkin, declare the arm & hand over the filled out paperwork, TSA inspection, check in the luggage/guncase, board the plane. Its really easy.

I flew roundtrip PIT to TPA back in 04/06 and brought my 1911 and Bersa 380. Not a hassle, issue, attitude, or raised eyebrow. Just smiles and politeness on both ends.

Flying with a laptop is a bigger PITA than flying with a firearm.

I agree with that 100%. I HATE HATE HATE business trips. And out of the country is 10 times worse.

    No.
You can purchase it, but you can not take possession of it. Interstate sales of handguns must be transferred through a FFL in your state of residence.

What about if he's stationed here? I thought that might cover residency if he has his orders??

    I think so...

You must be a resident of the state in which you are purchasing the handgun.

I do believe that being stationed here *does* count as residency but have to check to be sure.
