Re: considering 1st shotgun for Home Defense
Just me, but I am a confirmed Mossy guy.
I would go for a used Mossy ahead of the cheapies, just check it out well.

Re: considering 1st shotgun for Home Defense
If it's cheap or no home defense, go with cheap. If it's just to save a little money, I'd go with the proven Mossberg or Remington. It's not like you're getting this just to bust some clay targets. These are for home defense and a few extra dollars buys a history of reliability and easy access to service and repair.
This is not to say that a Rossi, Interstatearms or Charles Daily wouldn't of be service. I'm sure they would. It's just the difference in cost between one of them and a 500 or 870 isn't going to be that great. (Additionally, you can often find 500s and 870s used for a good price as well.)

Re: considering 1st shotgun for Home Defense
my vote is for the 870 and its just because i have one, nothing against mossberg but i never shot one......i find the 870 to be put together very well and also has been through a lot of abuse and still runs great.......if its for home defense i would either get the 870 or mossy ar something in similar quality........the cheaper guns are ok as a second shotty, beater gun, trunk gun and such but if its your first line of defense spend a little more and make sure whatever it is you take the time to shoot it a bunch, practice reloads and pattern different loads in your gun.......oh and get it in 12ga ....youll regret the 20ga

Also a vote for the Mossberg 500 20 gauge 18.5". With a pistol grip on it the safety is at a bad place though (on top).
I use #3 buck although I did pick up a *few* rounds of #2 steel.I am ashamed of those who represent me.
