To be honest I'd be more concerned with easy access and my personal comfort than bending the barrel. (Are you familiar with "The Princess and the Pea"? I'd think a rifle would cause just a bit more discomfort.)
I don't see where there would be any problem with keeping a piece of solid hardware between 2 flat surfaces even if the weight distribution wasn't even. If there's a scope on it there might be some cause for concern, especially if you use it for competition shooting.

Could probably find one at a yard sale for 10 or 20 bucks.

I don't know about harming your rifle but I'm thinking my back is happy that mine sits beside the bed instead of in it. Can't wait until I can afford a nice safe.
