Re: where can i get steal plates at?
I got steel for my range at Glicks scrapyard . They are on Rt.73 just past the intersection of Rt 73 and Rt12. They will have any size you want. The cost is 50 cents a pound and they will cut for a small fee. Great place.

Re: where can i get steal plates at?
Tac Strike makes incredibly durable targets. I have shot these during multiple handgun, shotgun, and carbine courses and the durability is fantastic. The points made about getting an AR500 or better steel are valid. Don't go to a scrap yard and get a hunk of steel, as you can not reliably predict where the spall will end up. A good steel target will last you a lifetime, even if you are putting up a good chunk of money from the get go. The only other issue i see you having is that some ranges/clubs frown upon you bringing your own steel, but it is really club dependent. Mine is fine with it, provided the steel is approved by the club.

I have been happy with these targets, http://www.bigdogsteel.com/necta.html.
1/4" soft steel is ok for .22's, and 3/8" is good for most handguns if you can find someone local to cut it.
I use old climbing rope for hanging the targets. It takes a couple of direct hits to cut it, and I have alot if it. I would use whatever you have abundant access too and don't have to buy (rope, firehose, conveyor belt rubber, etc.).Last edited by villageidiot; November 22nd, 2012 at 11:23 AM.

i like MGM targets.
they have a good selection at reasonable prices
i like their 4" man-shaped popper. it's a realistic challenge at 100 yards.

Re: where can i get steal plates at?
Why Cor-Ten? It's just a weathering steel. Nothing special as far as hardness, puncture resistance, impact resistance, or abrasion resistance goes. Which are qualities most look for in steel for targets. Sure it will last much longer than a normal steel out in the elements but I have a feeling rust isn't the reason most steel targets get replaced.
