I agree with the above. I don't see an AR ban in the distant future. It's in the news a lot but I can't see a surprise ban coming from anywhere at this time. I will continue to stock up but at a slower pace than pre-election.

I don't think anyone should ever "panic buy." You should be continually assessing your needs and wants, the current market, and your monetary situation, and approach all your purchases logically (though I myself have failed to do this many times). You should never feel scared into buying something.

That being said, as an ex-resident of one of those "other states" where you're treated like a criminal for wanting to own a gun, I must say that you CANNOT get complacent. You should NEVER say "it's not gonna happen here," either from a local or national level. Because if you do that long enough, it WILL happen here. And once it does, it's gonna be near impossible to roll back.

    Full disclosure.
I've been planning an AR build for a while.
I just let Empty talk me into getting it started.

Can someone explain in 2 sentences or less why some AR receivers are marked "multi caliber"?
As I understand it, there is no difference between a 556 receiver and a multi caliber receiver?

Marked multi because it's not assembled into a specific caliber rifle. You can use that receiver to build any number of different caliber rifles, carbines and pistols.

    .458 SOCOM
    .50 Action Express
    .50 Beowulf

AR-15 using a simple blowback operation
    .17 HMR

I also don't advocate a panic buy, but if you are currently dicking around and you don't know if you should buy the stuff you need TODAY, or wait until a week or two from now, I'm pointing out that you'd better decide what you want - inexpensive, easily sourced parts now, OR paying 3X the price for a lower or LPK in two weeks IF you can find the one you want?

If you are in no hurry... things will settle down. How long that takes is beyond anyone's control and can be impacted further by any number of social/political factors along the way - good or bad.

I just talked myself out of buying that upper.
I have more AR15s than I have hands and feet, so even if I never get to build another rifle again, I think I'll get by.

    EDIT:

    Oh, by the way...

    Only 293 (lowers) available!

    Thank you.
Is the "multi" just marketing, meaning it could have no caliber related marking at all?

Not so much "marketing" as eliminating any questions/concerns.

I've never really found a straight, informed answer to the question you're asking, but every conversation ends up with "it has no legal bearing" on what caliber you ultimately end up using.

I did some looking before and I didn't find anything definitive either.
Admittedly I didn't direct the gaze of the all seeing eye at the problem, but it doesn't really need answering I guess.
