Re: 450 Bushmaster 458 Socom 50 Beowulf
We have all three of these calibers in our MG rental program and the 50 Beowulf is the beast of the group.
458 SOCOM uses a Tromix upper.
50 Beowulf uses a Alexander Arms upper.
450 Bushmaster uses a Great Lakes Firearms upper.
Personally, I prefer the 458 SOCOM but 450 Bushmaster has a bigger ammo selection.Washington County Machine Guns & Tactical Range -- CMP Affiliated Club -- FFL 07 / FFL 10 / FEL 20 / SOT 02 / ITAR

Re: 450 Bushmaster 458 Socom 50 Beowulf
*UPDATE:
Got everything put together. 18" .458 Socom with mid-length gas. Barrel was dimpled for gas block set screw.
First test fire, went BANG, but failed to extract empty case from chamber. Had to mortar it out. Took everything apart, cleaned and lubed it, and gave another test fire. BANG again but no extraction. Had to mortar the empty case out again.
Tried a trick that I think Uncle Jumbo mentioned in the "All things AR thread" - got some aquarium tubing and put it on the BCG end of the gas tube and tried to find the best airflow while adjusting the gas block. Seems like maybe it needs to be slightly off center(IDK?).
Also I had a Spike's T2 buffer installed and have removed it and put a regular carbine buffer in.
I'll have to wait until tomorrow to resume testing. So frustrating not having shit work right away.

If you chamfer the gasport before assembly it allows for some misalignment of the gasblock

Well got out again today, and more failure, although I did see some progress.
I went from "no extraction" to mostly "stovepipe" ejection. Nothing chambered another round or locked a bolt back on empty.
Getting too frustrated @ ~$1.70/round.

Re: 450 Bushmaster 458 Socom 50 Beowulf
I'm happy I found this thread. I've been thinking about buying or building an upper in one of these calibers.
I'm leaning toward the .450 BM.

Gas key seems solid. I've been all over the web searching tips. Made sure there's no O ring in the extractor per Arf.com.
At this point I'm thinking undersized gas port but I'm hesitant to go drilling on the barrel before I decide on whether I want to spend the shipping charges for a $50 barrel to return for warranty.
