I have a great idea. Why don't you just ask nicely if you don't understand. If my description leaves a bit to be desired, so do your social skills. It wasn't a tutorial. And with basic common sense applied to the situation there is about only one way an existing hole could get tapped for a set screw, and regulate gas by orifice size.

The screw was tapped directly into the hole in the gas block the gas comes out of the barrel from. Then an Allen head set screw was installed. This set screw was drilled through, to allow gas to pass through it. But less than the original hole in the gas block. Effectively reducing the amount of gas acting on the piston. Like a nitrous or carbeurator jet.

Hey, even I was able to figure out what you meant, and I don't even think I've ever seen my gas block yet.

I thought it was pretty self explanatory? And there's no way to get a camera to focus on the back of the gas block, plus you can't really see anything since it's IN the gas block hole. And it basically just looks like the gas block hole is now smaller.

But in all seriousness I will probably go through all my AK type weapons and do this after the improvement on the Romanian AK.

I have a PSL that will probably end up with 2. One for reliably cycling light ball and NOT tossing cases into high orbit. It's just not needed, and accelerates wear and tear. Plus, increases the mechanical portion of felt recoil. Which I have personally found out is probably more noticeable than the actual muzzle energy induced recoil. (At least in these types of rifles) And one for heavy ball. Because, heavy ball on a gun over gassed with light ball = broken rifle.

Next up though will probably be the AMD. Since I think any time I calm down the bolt carrier speed to what is actually required for operation, and not 3x that amount. It reduces recoil significantly. Being this is a light rifle (if you even want to call it that it's such a tiny AK) I think any reduction in felt recoil will increase it's usefulness, and allow greater shot to shot accuracy when the stock is not deployed.

    Guess we'll see.

Wink Re: AK 47 Recoil echoing through stock?

    Alright,
without reading any of your thread. Can I do this to my WASR, will it be as awesome as yours, will you show me how, and what do I need to order. Thanks.

I'm not crazy. Nor am I a bitch. I went through the process of installing a 10/24 set screw in the gas block. Basically I tapped it and ran a set screw in that I ground the back off of so that just the allen head was the size of the opening. Reducing the size of the gas port. I also switched the brake to the slant brake. Gun shoots like a .223. Recoil was reduced and there's no more bolt carrier slam echoing through the stock. Spent cases are lobbed about 6 feet instead of into orbit. No cycling issues to speak of.
Ok, I went back and did read some of it. Sounds simple but I'll wait to shoot yours before I go drilling and taping.

A good 10/24 tap. And 2-3 SHORT set screws in the matching thread. Hell I still have 2 of those left. About 15 minutes worth of careful tapping. And 5 of careful grinding or drilling. (To end up with a hole through the set screw.) And then you just screw it in, and shoot.

But yeah you can shoot mine first if you like.

Just did my AMD. It took an 8/32 tap. Sum bitch ran right in. Using the second smallest set screws which I just grind the back off of and let the Allen hole be the new orifice... you only need 4-5 threads. This isn't precision work like it will be on my PSL. But its enough for a decent sized reduction in gas. Figure the 8/32 tap runs off of a .136 sized hole. Which makes sense since my 1/8 bit was a little loose. (.125) and we went down to a 5/64 Allen head. Which ends up being .078. Or nearly half.

Now I need to go shoot it and see if she runs better like the Romanian did. I think it will be more sensitive since its only a 12" barrel. But I bet that brake traps a mountain of useable gas. Which is probably why it can run such a small gas block port. If the cases come out 5-6 feet instead of 25-30. I think I'll call it mission accomplished.

On to the PSL next I guess pending my results with the AMD...

Let me know how this works for you. I too, have an orbital shell launcher that needs to be tamed. I was looking at my gas port and can see where you are restricting the amount of gas going to the piston. After studying this for a moment, I noticed there are 4 holes on the part where the hand guard and port meet. What about making these holes a little larger, or even adding 2 more holes to let more of the gas escape, therefore not putting so much pressure on the piston? Just a thought.

We did this to my wasr today with Asmo6 really taking his time.

Then we took it out for a test run. A hundred and forty rounds later the recoil is nice and tame, it felt like it was only a .223 AK.

Aside from just feel we could tell that there was infact a change because she was only launching the spent casings 5-6 feet away. As far as I can tell there were no cycling issues from this "mod", once though the gun did not chamber a new round but you could clearly see that the HP round had somehow gotten its nose wedged funny and got held up leaving the MAG.

Any concern about them working loose? Locktite?

Not really. And if it does by the time you end up finishing the "restrictor" the way I do it, it is only three threads thick, and about the size of a half carat diamond maybe? Shit, let it bounce down into the receiver for all I care. I get bigger gobs of laquer and primer sealer floating around down there. What's it going to do WCS? Have more gas?

That just means it still works, albeit slightly more violently.

Which is why I like this painfully simple mod. If it fails, the gun still works. If it doesn't fail, the gun still works.

If at some point you no longer want it in there you just unscrew it and voila, back to the original size hole. After a few dozen rounds I bet your threads will be filled in with fouling too. It will be just like it was. We're not actually "drilling" it for a tap. Just tapping the existing hole.

I like the fact my rifle does not beat itself to death any more. I left enough leeway in the port to cover a bad / hot / cold / gritty situation. A 5-8ft casual toss of the cases is a far cry from the 20-25ft it would chuck them previously. But not like they are dropping at my feet with just enough force to drop the case out of the side of the weapon.

I know you have a Romanian AK. Go to your hardware store, get a 10/24 tap. And some of the matching set screws. Put the tap into the gas port, and the side of the tap against the top of the gas block opening. Like this ----> -/

If you need a visual stick a drill bit into the gas port so you can see the extreme angle it takes into the barrel. You need an honest to god 3-4 threads to seat a set screw down far enough that it cannot "interact" with the gas piston. (If you use a small one, get the smallest, or next to the smallest size available) Grind the back of the set screw off until you hit the allen wrench you inserted into it to hold it. One the set screw drops down the allen wrench, clean it, coat it with anti-seize and install it *snug* but not tight.

Clean the bore WELL and go shoot it.

If possible shoot the rifle before you do this mod. So it's nice and clear in your head how the rifle behaves. Then when you go back you'll see what I mean.

If you prefer the feeling of bolt carrier hitting trunion at 500mph, just take the screw out any time you'd like.

ETA: The AMD took the reduction as well. I think it's now using a 5/64 sized hole instead of the slightly larger than 1/8th in. port. No issues. And this is a real AMD barrel. 12" or w/e. And it still lobs cases a good ways. I blame this on the fact of it's absolute buttery action. Thing is slick for an AK. Almost no hammer interference on this one. Racking it is a joy.
