Re: Odd Calibers
The reason is simple someone thought they could do it better than a current cartridge, so they came up with what they thought was better. Some have been proven right some have gone the way of the Dodo. Some of the current better ideas are 6.8 spc, 6.5 Grendel and .50 Beowulf. We will see which survives. My bet is the Grendel and Beowulf.
I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.

Re: Odd Calibers
Wildcats and cartridge designations can be the cause of much confusion, but the .222 Rem. is not the parent case of the .223 Rem. , 222.Rem. Mag, or the .204 Ruger.

try again...
and again
When the US military was looking for a new smallbore rifle cartridge, Remington started with the .222 Remington, and stretched it to increase powder capacity by about 20% in 1958 to make the .222 Remington Magnum. The greater powder capacity put the velocities between the standard .222 Remington and the 22-250. The cartridge was not accepted by the military, but it was introduced commercially. In 1963, the 5.56 x 45 mm, also based on a stretched .222 Rem. case, was adopted along with the new M16 rifle. The 5.56 mm cartridge had a capacity only slightly less (5%) than the .222 Rem. Mag. The new 5.56x45mm cartridge was commercialized by Remington, the .223 Remington. Given the close performance to other cartridges and military acceptance, both the .222 Remington and the .222 Rem. Mag. faded quickly into obsolescence, being replaced by the .223 Remington.Last edited by West Chester; March 8th, 2010 at 11:21 AM.

Re: Odd Calibers
I have a few Contenders that take Wildcat cartridges. one is a 30cal Herret. This one includes taking a existing cartridge, cutting it down and reforming it before reloading them. The gun came with some rounds and the reloading dies.
These are not for everyone.troll Free. It's all in your mind.

Re: Odd Calibers
I would like to have one cartridge for ever caliber that is out there.
I went to a cartridge collecting show in Lancaster to look for interesting rounds of ammo. I thought I was fairly experienced and had heard of most of the types of ammo. Wrong. Your would not believe how many kinds of ammo cartridges there are. The show was in a place about the size of a basketball gym. "No big deal, I can just this place in half an hour" I thought. At a gun show, you can look at a table and size it up in about 5 seconds. At a cartridge show, there can be thousands of rounds on a couple of tables. I was there over 4 hours and still didn't see it all. The first guy I met specialized in .308. He had over 3500 different kinds and headstamps. Now, if I could just figure out a way to catalog and display them.
Here are several lists of cartridges.

The authority group to learn more from is:
International Ammunition Association, Inc.

The worlds fair of cartridges is called the St. Louis International Cartridge Show. It happens at the end of this month and I get to go.
Another smaller one comes in June here in Pennsylvania and then another in August. It is very, very interesting. They are completely different from a "gun show" mentality. All of the collectors are mainly retired folks who travel around to collect and see each other. That explains why the show starts on Friday and then closes Saturday at noon.
