    Default Why the extra ammo?

I see some people carry spare mags, sometimes 2,3+ and I can think of a reason why you need all that ammo.

Now I will not claim to be the best shot by any means but walking around with 30+ rounds I just can't understand...

So could someone enlighten me as to why someone would need more then the mag already in their firearm?

After using the gun in a self defense situation, it's a good idea to refill the magazine to full capacity, in case of a secondary attack.

Most guns store 8 rounds are bare min, are we really going to u load 8 rounds in the bg. I was taught 2 center mass. 1 in the head, back to low ready look around and assess as needed...

Anymore then one magazine is overkill in a sd situation

This. You have a better than 50% chance of getting attacked by multiple attackers. Criminals are smart, they rarely work alone.

Also most problems that occur with handguns, such as running out of ammo, and malfunctions can be fixed by putting in a new magazine.

What if you need 9 rounds? While the chances of using more than 1 magazine in a SD situation are low, the chances of you using more than one is zero. What if you get a Type 3 malf? It seems whoever taught you didn't know what they were doing.

    A few reasons

    1) The number one cause of failures in quality handguns is magazine related. If a tap-rack doesn't fix the problem, you will need another magazine to stay in the fight.

    2) Anyone who can tell you how many rounds it will take to stop a bad guy is a fraud. We shoot to stop, and that means we keep shooting until the target stops. This may take significantly more ammunition than you think, especially if your opponent is under the influence of drugs (adrenaline counts) or particularly determined.

    3) As Justin and signmaker said, criminals are smart, or at least wise (remember, crime is their job) and travel in groups. You should always be prepared for secondary engagements.

    4) With a fully loaded Glock 19 on my hip, 2 spare magazines on the other side provides better balance on the belt. It's simply more comfortable.

I hope that clears thing up better than "you never know" or "the only time you can have too much ammo is when you are drowning or on fire".

    ^^^^^^^^
    This!
All the training I had has stressed the use of extra Mags due to malfunction. What kind of training does not go over malfunctions and how to deal with them.

May I ask where you got your training? I have never met a trainer who advocates the body armor failure drill but does not advocate an after-action magazine change, and I'm always up for hearing about new folks.

I think you need to take a step back and think about what you wrote here. You're right, 2 center mass, 1 in the head. Now, how confident are you that you'll pull that off on a moving target under an extreme stress situation?

Funny thing about paper targets at the range, they don't really move a whole lot. Now think about all the times we've heard about the highly trained police officers shooting 60 rounds and hitting less than 10 times.

Better to have it and not needing it, then to need it and not have it!!!!!
