    Default AR for hunting?

I am trying to find a rifle my son can shoot well to hunt deer with next week. The only options I have is 30-06, 30-30, and 300blk. Since he is only 9, the my 06 is way too heavy for him. My Marlin 30-30 is ok for him to shoot, but just a bit too big for him to handle safely. That brings me to my AR in 300blk. He has shot it numerous times and handles it very well. Now I can make it so it does not function as an autoloader and will need to manually cycle the action in order to load the next round. Is this legal for hunting in PA in this configuration?

If it is easily changeable in the field it will be just asking for a citation. ...and probably confiscation.

I'm not a hunter but this has come up before and the consensus is:

Permanently filling in the gas port and where the gas tube enters the receiver and your probably OK. But expect a bit of an argument in the field if found or worse.

Taking out the gas tube is not going to be enough.

I think maybe I am going to go right to the source for the answer. I was going to remove the gas tube and install a section of solid rod to block the hole in the block. Like I said not easily converted in the field without tools.

That would be best, and ask for it in writting and carry with you when hunting

And for the last 20 some years I've been hunting the same spot and never once saw a GW. And just my luck, if I was to just do this, this would be the year I get a new friend!

    Yup! That's my luck too..

A missing gas tube and blocked/plugged gas port should be considered the minimum criteria as a "conversion".

A permanent conversion would be legal. But if it looks like a semi-auto, and a PGC officers see it, you should expect having to explain things. Not all game commission officers will be knowledgeable of the law, and not all will take the extra effort/time to see if it operates manually.
