Default Deer rifle for torn shoulder

I just started hunting this year and got hooked on it. I bought a used 30-06 bolt action action at a local gun store and then a 12 gauge field/slug combo set. The problem I have is that I am getting surgery for a torn shoulder in August and I will not be healed enough to use either of these for deer rifle season. I am thinking about buying a used .30-30 or even a .243. Are there any other good calibers to use. I dont need anything that will reach out 300m+ i just need something that would put down a deer at the most 100m. I am kind of on a budget so I dont want to spend too much.

Hope you get better soon ! I am fond of my 7mm-08 light recoil great accuracy from this round,I would suggest when able try these calibers at your local range, you can alway ask a shooter most they can say is no,but most will be sympathetic to you shoulder injury, good luck !

    A .243, 6.5 x 55, 257 Roberts, 7mm Mauser are all low recoil cartridges suitable for deer.

Could always have a muzzle brake installed on your current rifle as well as a limb saver recoil pad.
You may find me dead in a ditch one day. But by God, I'll be lying in a pile of brass.

I already have a limb save on my 30-06 but the force is still enough to cause some pain now even when i havent have the surgery, which will probably not be able to take the recoil by late nov. I am thinking about the recoil management rounds by Remington but I dont know much about them.

don't forget, the heavier the rifle, the less the recoil.

not a physicist (IANAP), but i beleive it is a 1 to 1 ratio. Increase the gun weight by 25%, you reduce the recoil by 25%.

    Something to think about.

I have a Remington CDL in 7mm08. When shooting 120 grain barnes its like a pee shooter. The other rifle I have and love is my Weatherby ultrlight in 257 magnum and I did put a brake on it. Its great to see where your bullet strikes thru your scope. Hope your shoulder heals well and good hunting.

Light recoil, easy on the shoulder? Try out a 38/357 lever action. If you want to stick to a bolt action, .243 .257

    Just my .02

Not wanting to rain on your parade. However you may be sitting this hunting season out, depending on your age and severity of the surgery, My wife had shoulder surgery in January the Doctor and therapist both tell she is doing better than most. However they say 6 months before any improvement and a year before they want her lifting anything over a couple pounds. She also hunts and ask the Doctor about hunting. His response was why would you want to mess up everything he did to repair her shoulder.
She is 60 and age makes all the difference. Also if you can hunt, you could look into low recoil ammo Or get someone you trust to reload down some ammo for you..

Sounds like you have plenty of time to practice shooting with the other hand.

It's not that hard, try it. After your surgery you will be doing a lot of things with your other hand so best to start it now.
