    Default Survival Rifles

Now.. let me start off by stating that when I say Survival Rifle, I mean something used for taking down small to medium game for meal purposes in the wild. Said rifle should be a relatively low caliber with few moving parts as to allow for easy field take down, cleaning, assembly, and perhaps minor repair.

Low pack weight is a perk as well as semi-auto function as apposed to single. I trust my shots on small game enough with a single shot, but it's nice to have that second shot ready and waiting for that occasional miss.

With that.. any suggestions for the rifles? I'd love to have an M6 Scout, but I missed the time-frame when these were still manufactured.. blast!

Hit me with you ideas! I'd love to hear them. I'll probably take the best idea, purchase, and test it on my spring ventures this coming year.

    Thanks for your submissions!

(Also looking for some sturdy knives too. Any opinions on KA-BARs Pilot Survival knife? I hear the sawback isn't too good for wood though..)

Rossi Trifecta... I got one of these for my son to start hunting. It came with a .22/.243/20ga barrel. The barrels can be swapped out in less than a minute and would allow you to take almost any game in Pa.

It is single shot, break action that has very few moving parts. It can be taken down and stored/carried in most back packs. This rifle will go wiht me when the SHTF as a back up to my other stuff.

I have an M6 Scout, if you can get a hold of one they're fantastic.

I used to run see-thru set of rings with a scope for .410 slugs but just run it with irons now.

As far as knives go bolt knives like standard kabars cant take the same level of abuse as esee or rat knives. You want something full tang.

That's an easy question to answer...

    Henry survival AR-7

    http://www.henryrepeating.com/h002_survival.cfm

    & it's only $245 MSR

The only problem with it is that it is Semi Auto so if you had to survive by using it in PA you'd be breaking the law even if you took game in season.

For a SHTF weapon...and you can only have one firearm...I'd say a shotgun...since it can take down small game to large game. If you need it for SD/HD...you can load it with buckshot. If you need to take a 100 yard shot on deer...get a slug barrel and you are in business.

There is no magic firearm that can do it all, but if I had to pick just one firearm for multiple roles, it would be a good shotgun. Pump has less moving parts if you follow the logic of less parts = less failures. Semi shotguns are good as well.

Another nice thing about the shotgun is that they are relatively inexpensive.

You can still find used 22lr/410 (or 20G) O/O at gun shows.
Savage is the one mfg. that comes to mind.

Ah the memories, it was one of the very first rifles I ever fired ~ back then it was a genuine Armalite AR-7.

Salting those wounds, huh?! That's a nice rifle, bud. I'm jealous.. If you ever want to sell.. you know.. Haha.

But thanks everyone for the recommendations. I've been looking a different rifles for a while.. Some of which were mentioned here. Decisions decisions.. I was hoping for something in a .22 or .223.. Hmm..

Get an AR of your choice, tons of parts, upgrades, readily available ammo. Add in one of the popular .22LR conversions, small enough to keep in the gun-bag.

Of course you can't hunt with it in PA, but it'll be OK to take the non-infected game once the zombie apocalypse wipes out the social infrastructure of the state.
