Default could i go wrong with a mossberg 500 field?

hey guys, looking for an all around dependable shotgun. Mainly for trap shooting maybe twice a month, then waterfowl hunting. Would the mossberg 500 field with the interchangable choke tubes and the 28" in barrel be good for this? I know for hunting I will have to put a plug in the magazine. Take into account my price range is about 300-400.

I think either the Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 would suit you equally well in your price range. I love my 870 and own a lot of Remingtons so I guess I'm partial to them but I have shot several 500s and they are also a great all around shotgun.

Mossberg 500's are simply good guns.

The safety and slide release are where they should be on a Mossberg. I prefer them.

I have to say I love my mossberg 500 . That's me holding the trophy I won with it.

If you are going to put a lot of rounds through it I would spend the extra money and get the Remington 870 you won't be sorry. If you are only shooting a couple rounds of trap every now and then the Mossberg will be just fine. The safeties are in completely different spots so that could be your deciding factor.

It's a fit and feel thing. The 500 is fine for what you want to do but the 870 is just a bit better. A used Browning BPS would be in your price range also. I've shot all three and would get all three. If the 500 fits you and feels right, get it and have fun.

The Mossberg 500 Field will fit your purposes perfectly. As long as the one you get fits you properly, there is no reason to doubt the purchase. Mossberg 500s are quality shotguns.

Have fun with it!

Just a thought. You might consider the Mossberg 835 pump. With a 28 inch back-bored, vent rib, ported barrel, screw in Acu Mag chokes you should do OK. I use the 28 inch barrel with modified choke for trap with pretty decent results. Doesn't have the variety of HD screwy gew gaws that you can get for the 500 or the Rem 870, but you can get a rifled slug barrel for 4-footed game and the 28 for wing and trap.
