I've owned both the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 and I would go with the Mossberg. Don't let alot of rounds being put through it sway you to the 870 like suggested by another poster, our military uses the 500 and I doubt you'll put more rounds through it then they do. I liked the feel of the 500 much better-the safety is in the right place and even though they weigh the same I remember the 870 feeling unweildy. (I have neither gun anymore) BTW for some reason I couldn't keep the rust off my 870
