A Mossberg 590 will be fine for home defense. I don't know about ghost rings (not that great in the dark, IMO), but it should work out fine. The most important thing for a home defense gun is that you are proficient and comfortable with it. It requires a good bit of practice--you want operating the gun to be automatic and second nature, because thought will escape you in a high stress situation.

I personally use slugs in my shotgun because if you're in your home and shoot at someone, the pattern from 00 buckshot won't be more than 3-5" across unless you're shooting down an extremely long hallway.

Taking responsibility for your personal defense is not lame.

My neighbor has a mossberg, likes it a lot. I personally don't care for ghost ring sights.

Well, I was just using the terms that the bureaucrats would use to classify them as. The "semi auto submachine gun" reference was a mac 11 (yea wrong term again, but no confusion as to what I'm referring to that way).

The Mossberg 590A1 isn't a bad choice at all, but I would also give equal consideration to the Remington 870 Police Magnum, which is also available with ghost ring sights. I recommend handling both and choosing the one which seems "right."

I'm personally fond of Federal LE Reduced Recoil 00 buck and slugs, but I haven't located any for sale anywhere in quite some time. Any quality offering from Federal, Remington and Winchester should serve quite admirably.

I have a Remington 870 as my HD weapon. I swapped out the barrel for an 18 1/2inch replacement. Downside is it only holds 4 rounds +1 in chamber. BUT, I practice shooting, loading, unloading. And I practice loading in the dark just to get the feel.
I have mine loaded with Hornady's TAP-FPD 12ga. 00buck. My house is an old farmhouse with thick plaster walls, so I went for the 00buck. I also attached a Surefire light. I went for the more simple approach to a home defense shotgun. That being said, I've heard and read very good things about Mossberg and wouldn't hesitate to purchase one if I want a second shotgun.

It's possible to get a factory magazine extension for it which can be installed with minor to no gunsmithing depending on which model 870 you have. Some police models come with them already installed, and they're easily installed on ones without them because the mazagine tubes have no "dimples" that require removal.

Here is a good write-up of some of the differences (moss 500 vs 870) and how they might apply to you and your situation.

A very nice choice in my opinion, that being said i, was going to get the 590 A1,but i went with the much cheaper mossberg 88 12 gauge 18.5" barrel and using the cash i saved to put down on my new AR15 im gonna get for christmas. but thats just me.
