What kind of job requires a tactical shotgun, but doesn't provide it?

Here's a former Police/Tactical shotgun that you won't see very often:

Pretty cool -a nice conversation piece, to be sure! What's the story on it; is it up for auction or sale, or... ???

Bob,
I got this one on gunbroker a few years back. It's not for sale, at this time. I'm an H&R collector and I just had to have it in my collection. I haven't fired it, but am really tempted to give it a try. The receiver and action parts were made by ManuFrance, shipped to H&R where it was assembled with H&R parts into the finished product - all Model 440's went through this routine, but this one was put together specially for the police dept. The action is so damn smooth it practically cycles itself, must have had some very fine hand work done to it. Here's a pic. of the letter of provenance that came along with it.

That's a DAMN fine shootin' iron, 32! Neat how you managed to snag it! I can understand being torn between wanting to keep it immaculate, and letting 'er loose, doing what she was BUILT to do! Just promise, that if you do open 'er up on a range somewhere, we all get to hear a firsthand report!

Bob,
Thanks. If I do try it out, and the urge is really getting stronger, I'll be sure to let you all know how it shoots. Damn, my trigger finger is getting itchier. The biggest problem with collecting is having a bunch of guns you don't feel right about shooting because of the collectibility. There are quite a few in the collection that really call to me. In fact, I started shooting some of them, this year, for the first time since I've acquired them. I picked up a really fine 1944 or '45 H&R Reising Model 60 .45ACP Semi-auto carbine a couple months back - took it to the range, fired it exactly 36 times before the firing pin broke. Just got it back up and running last week and back to the range it went - found out I need some new mag springs, also. Just part of the fun.
