The aforementioned Competition Master is my personal favorite shotgun. However, I should point out that I'm not a very good shotgunner, and I don't shoot flying things very much.

Also, at least on Remington's website as the "Competition Master" any more, but the same gun with black furniture is now in their LE line.

My standard for what it will run is that it will run $4.50 a box shells, but not $3.50 a box shells. I'm sure this falls in line with Lycanthrope's observations.

I also own pump guns by Remington, Winchester, and Mossberg. For a non-sporting gun, one of the better deals is the 870 HD, which is very similar to a Police Magnum and goes for around $300.

I agree.

There is a new CM on the USPSA forums for $650 NIB.....but you can start off with a new 1100 or 11/87 for cheaper and add options to suit. Good pumps are a usually half the cost of good autos. The 870 is an excellent weapon.

Firearms are personal. HD firearms are personal and a part of the family. When people mention HD firearms I recommend the guns that they shoot the fastest, most accurately and are reliable.....no holds barred. I'm an Expert shooter in IDPA and an "A" class shooter in USPSA, but when I was backed around my car by a crack fiend (I was carrying my 4" 1911).....all I could think of was.."I wish I had a bigger gun (the 2011, the AR or the CM)". If the auto runs 9998/1000 and the pump runs 9999/1000 and the auto is .15 second faster......I'm in with the auto. Most often....first center of mass shot wins.

Oh don't worry, it's not just you that keeps beating this movie magic dead horse into the ground every 10th post in the shotgun forum.

In fact, you're right. The Remington 870 chambering noise may just be so intimidating, the next war we don't feel like fighting should probably be solved by the POTUS chambering a shell in his very own, made in the U-nited States of America Remington 870 during a conference call with whatever middle eastern or eastern european dictator / psychopath that needs to settle himself the fuck down with those nuclear or biological weapons. It scares the pants right off the ones that endorse genocide, and the butchering of children and women too. So there's nothing that sound can't solve.

This message is brought to you by "the Remington 870 association of owners more impressed with the noise their shotgun makes when fired COM than the moron who is going to chamber one to show you who's boss."

I own a Remington 870 and I endorse this message.\\

If you are after a pump gun the 870 is a great option.

The Mossberg 500, Remington 870, and Winchester 1200 are all great pump guns. Why not go to your local gun store or stores and see if you can possibly pick up and hold each one and see how it feels to you. Pick the one you are the most comfortable holding. To me personally a Mossberg or Remington are much more comfortable to hold than a Benelli. And the stocks can be changed on any of them to a pistol grip full length stock just like the Super Nova

You can shop Wal-Mart for a decent priced Remington 870, or Mossberg 500.
Either would be a great choice, but, the Remington is actually faster and easier to change a barrel on, so, if you want a quick moving defender for the home, get an 870, and then get a spare barrel.
Have it cut to 18 1/2", and keep the 28" or whatever it is for clay shooting and hunting.
I found my Mossberg 500 in a pawn shop and paid $175 for it, and it was actually a pawned shotgun still NIB.
Wally's had them for $229, and Remington 870s for $279 last spring-time.
Nothing beats a 12 gauge jacking a shell in the dark to make you lose control of your bladder.
