I might be the odd man out here but here goes ....
MHO the Mossberg functions well and is reliable to a point. I'ts the perfect shotgun
for someone that is not going to shoot the snot out of it.
Hence use by the Scott TWP Police. (smile)

My experience with a 500 many years ago was very positive untill a point. I was handloading and shot the snot out of it. The trigger group would no longer stay in place as the ret. pin completely elongated the hole in the receiver.

Would I buy another Mossberg? Maybe. If the conditions were right.

Fragger, I agree with you. It is not meant to be rough housed with like a Remington 870 is similar guise. I do have a Remington 870 Express Magnum with a smoothbore 20" barrel and Imp. Cyl. choke I want to "ugly" up someday.

How long ago did you have this experience. I'm on my second Mossy and they do make fine hunting shotguns. My first one was bought in the 80s and wasn't something that I would have put a lot of heavy rounds through. The current one I might.

Bill this was a long time ago. Guessing here .... I'd say very early 80's. I feel if the receiver would have been made of steel instead of bi metal - aluminum or whatever it is that gun would still be running today.
Also I do have to admit that some of those handloads were Max+. I remember having it duck hunting and goose hunting over at the Project.

Even though I got my M-500A Persuader 8 shot as a gift from my wife and I have shot 3" magnums through it, I'll not make common practice of it. I'll stick to 2 3/4" loads in whatever size of Buckshot and slugs. Even some heavy or medium sized non magnum birdshot to ward off vermin and unwarrented intruders, should the need arise. If I need to use heavier loads in defense, I got my 870 Exp. Mag. deer shotgun.

I tried SOoo hard to buy a Mossburg500 P cuz I saw they would accept a Knoxx stock and came with the extended tube and I wanted quality without spending too much but I just couldn't! I bought a Remington 1100 when I was 18 and have a 870SP and just knew I'd screw-up under stress going for the safety on the Mossburg. I fiqure for $300 the Remington is a steal for me if my life might depend on it.

Don't listen to me though..I went looking at shotguns at Gander Mtn for a possible sporting clays- only gun and I've never owned an over-n-under. I just went for feel without turning the tags to look at prices. I ended up liking 2 but one had shody looking engraving. The shody-engraving model turned out to be a Berretta Citori that cost $1,700 bucks! Opps-whatdoIknow! Hehehe.

One gun to do both things will be tough. Buying two shotguns would be the best solution and you can stay under $500. I would second the motion for the Benelli Nova Tactical with ghost ring sights. 18" barrel with a fixed cylinder choke. Perfect for #4 bucksot at close quarters. I own one and can tell you that I love it. You can pick up a standard Mossy 500 28" barrel at Wally World for $189 with IC-M-F chokes. IC will work great for skeet. I have shot the action out of a 500 years ago, but that was after thousands of rounds. I more than got my $200 worth.

Most current shotguns can be adjusted to fit optics. You thinking red dot or scope? If you get optics, make sure that the unit will survive the recoil of a 12ga.
I'm a Mossberg fan
