Default Suggested Shotguns for Home Defense/Fun

Anyone suggest a home defense/target shotgun? Something inexpensive/reliable, and fun to shoot. EM what model shotty was that you had at PMSC that I shot, that was pretty nice. I don't currently do any trap/skeet, but who knows that might be a fun possibiltiy once I get a little more time under my belt with it, just shot my first shotguns on Sunday thanks to EM and Joe Smith.

Remington 870's and Mossberg 500's are the most popular inexpensive shottys. I'll have a few other shottys at the group shoot if you want to try different ones out.

There are a lot of different shotties out there, but I would suggest a Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870. Both are well built, reliable and have tons of aftermarket stuff available!

and then as far as ammo for home defense purposes, what type to use? I know there is the bird shot (not good for home defense unless you wanna piss someone off) and then there are like slugs (which i would guess in my apartment might be possibly over-penetrating and kill a neighbor) so what to use? I really just need to get myself a shotgun edumacation

I wouldn't worry too much on over penetration.

Mossberg Persuader 12 Ga pump w/ghost ring sights. 18.5" barrel.
Choate brand aftermarket pistol grip stock.
Cheapo Tac-Star light.

Nothing fancy. Works for me.

I recommend trying a Remington 870... I've only shot one of them once. The pump seemed to operate more smoothly than mine. Perhaps it was more "seasoned"? I don't know.

I was reffering to the slugs. It's a typical newbee question. I think the chances are greater that you'll miss your intended target, than actually will have to use it in a "situation". My 2 cents.

Buckshot is the best Home Defense round. 00b or 000b. Chances of over penetration are reduced and they are very effective antipersonnel rounds.

Also, I cannot recommend the Mossberg 500/590 enough. It is an easy to handle, reliable and rugged shotgun designed for Law Enforcement and Military use.

And just for reference:
