I bought my S&W 1911 there in Feb '06 for $699, which was $50 cheaper than it would of been at the local store.

But in general, it does seem like the handgun prices are higher than average compared to NE PA.

I only shop there when they send me those vouchers and I can sucker friends into applying for a credit card. That, in conjunction with a sale can find you a nice deal on something.
I got my Mini-14 .22 cal conversion kit for $13.00 plus tax. Original price was $159.00.

I like Cabelas for the selection, but I hate shopping around the gun counter, those people don't strike me as knowing a whole lot about what they are selling.

There's only so many times I can stand having a gun pointed right at me.

The difference between them and a small shop is they are a pretty big corporation. More likely they would turn all your info over to any government IMHO. I believe that small dealers would defend the records of their customers they have to keep with their lives if need be .

Have you ever tried to look at a gun at Cabelas? You have to take a number and wait in line like your at a deli. There selection is good, but there are so many people there it's a nightmare. The gun prices are high and ammo isn't cheap either. I can buy it cheaper at Walmart. Unless I found an outstanding deal I would buy from a local shop or at a gun show instead. Don't get me wrong, I love checking out Cabelas, but I will buy my guns somewhere else.

All in all, I believe Cabelas is good for the very area. They have something for everyone..

They have a nice selection of guns and do offer a decent buck on a trade-in or outright purchase of your used gun.

If you just looking for one item - then yes, shop around. If your looking to trade and purchase new - then they are not bad to deal with.

The folks in the Gun Library are very knowledgeable and will assist if they can..

The weekends are the worst time to go. You should try Monday AM - and you have the place to yourself!

They are following a particular business model in much the same way that LL Bean does, but with more emphasis on hunting than LL Bean. They are cultivating a climate of value (above average quality at reasonable retail prices), not discount price. It is the same idea as a place like Bed Bath and Beyond or Staples, Office Depot, etc. They do not claim to offer everyday discounts like at Wal-Mart. I'm not sure how they do with guns, since just about anyone would be aware of a local shop with better prices. But they make their store into a destination and then I guess people see something that is kind of cool and then they go ahead and buy it since they are already right there. That store actually has dog kennels so that if you've got your dog with you in the car, the dog can hang out at the kennel while you shop, instead of having to leave the dog in the car. They really succeed at making the place a true "experience" instead of just being a big box discount shop.
AND

Where else can you take the whole family, and look at guns and have everyone enjoy themselves? The first time I went there, I took the kids. We spent a couple hours there and they really enjoyed themselves. That's a sporting goods/hunting retail home run if you ask me. Whoever came up with the idea did men a favor!

It's a great store, but yeah their gun prices are not "cheap". Like mentioned earlier, they are fairly reasonable and they do run sales that are often really good deals (like the recent SA XD .45 pkg for $489 I do think their used gun prices are way above average and worthy of complaining though. Many of their used guns sell for what new guns retail for... just not worth it.

I hit the bargain cave....and usually only make purchases when I get the coupons.

Still a fun place, and my kids do like it also.
