Default ak side scope mount

Not really interested in what you have on you ak for optics , I am more interested in what you think of the side rail scope mount system. Is it solid , hold zero well , can you use it well with what would apear like a crappy check weld , etc?? And what brand and where did you get it also

Shot someone elses AK-47 with side mount at range awhile back.

That side mounted russian mount was WAY above the stock - seemed like tight mount, I just didn't or couldn't repeat shots with it,(no good cheek weld for me).

Guy said it takes some getting used to, might be ok with a electronic mount, sure had no problem using iron sights with with scope on top.

Poor cheekweld is indeed the issue.

I don't think so. The inconsistency in cheekweld it creates is the problem. Getting the rifle's sights on target from Low Ready or Contact Ready is the most critical aspect of shooting a defensive rifle, even more so in a CQB environment.

Get an Ultimak.

Low profile mounts are available from Kalinka Optics. It's a little rough to get the top cover off with the mount on.

Aren't the side mount rails supposed to be riveted to the receiver??

Puts the optics way high. Also, the cheap mounts tend to fall off.

The only way to put optics on an ak is with the ultimak.

Ah , good point , removing the mount to get the receiver cover off is something I would like to avoid.
As far as the mount on the gas tube , I would like to be able to use the open sights with whatever I mount I use "red dot" most likely

Watch the gas tube rails, If your gas tube has a little slop in it you're screwed. As for side mounts, I've had 2, they both held zero pretty well after remove and replace. Not familiar with the Ultimak.

Side mounts are 2 piece, part is riveted to receiver, the other part slides on and off.

Supposedly LaRue Tactical is working on an Aimpoint mount that uses the side rail and allows the optic to co-witness with the iron sights.

We shall see.
