Early birthday present from my wife...

My birthday is this Sunday, so my wife surprise me with an early birthday present...
This new Remington 700P .308 Winchester...
Guess this will be my next project...
Will need bi-pod, base, rings, tactical scope, sling and work-up some hand load for it...
What's the break-in for a weapon such as this? One shot and swabs or what?
Any informations would be appreciated...
Load info. that you guys are using and result is also appreciated...

My gunsmith friend that builds custom rifles and is building one for me told me his "barrel break-in procedure" the other day. He builds guns that always shoot .25 moa or better, and alot of them .1's or 0's. He told me, first 5 shots, clean the barrel, don't just swab it, but clean it. Then after those 5 are out of the way, for 9 shots swab it ever 3, then for the next 10 shots swab it every 5. Then he said just shoot it how you want. Can't help you on load data for the .308 since I shoot .300 winmag primarily, and my gunsmith shoots alot of wildcats or mags himself. I'm sure there are PLENTY of .308 shooters who can help you out though. I know Aubie reloads and has some .308's that were grouping tight at 100 yards, maybe he'll chime in. Enjoy your rifle.

I'd recommend that you do get a gauge and check the distance to your lands before you start shooting (COAL). Develop your load and record your OAL of the bullet. Later if the load starts to change at the chronograph or group a bit more loosely than it has, measure the distance to your lands again. It will have changed some as you start to get a little throat erosion (which in .308 takes a while and will depend on the type of bullets you shoot also). Then take that difference that the lands have changed, and add that to the OAL of your bullet so that it is seating on the lands or just before the lands the way that it was when you developed the load. Depending on the bullet, barrel, load, etc, some like to be a few thousandths off the lands, others like to be a couple thousandths in the lands. This is a way to help compensate for barrel wear and keep the same load shooting well. Just make sure that the OAL is under what the specs are for the caliber, and that it'll still fit in the magazine, otherwise you'll have to load them as singles one at a time. Be aware that seating depth and changing the OAL will affect the pressures of the load, so always start low and work up looking for signs of over pressure. Also, after some wear has occurred to the throat of the barrel, always make sure that the bullet is seated far enough into the casing and isn't just gonna come loose, if this is getting close to being an issue, you need a new barrel. Anyway, hope that helps and holler at me if I can help in any other way.

Nice rifle!

Many people say breaking a rifle in is necessary, but if it was required then it would say so in the manual. Just clean your rifle before shooting it, and enjoy! That's all there is to it.

I have two guns that shoot .2 MOA and I broke both in by swabbing after every three shots for 50 rounds. I never use brushes or solvents until accuracy drops off hard. (several hundred rounds). WIth one it was guaranteed .5 MOA and the gunsmith sent those instructions.

It's a Mag-Xtender made by ArmsTech LLC. It's just an extended internal magazine, not a removable box magazine. It holds 7 rounds now.
