Looks like the M4 is up against some competition again...here's the article:

'Bout time. I applaud the Army's open-mindedness (for once)...I believe that they will find the HK (basically an AR with a gas-piston system) far more reliable...my Armalite AR180B uses this system, and there has never been a remote hiccup of any kind....wonder how the testing protocol goes?

[quote=TonyF;88623]Prediction: The DI guns will run as reliably as the piston guns and then there will be claims of "rigged" tests.QUOTE]
Agreed -- Seems to happen everytime the Army is forced to Retest a piece of equipment.

The piston design is going to be more reliable in this environment, it's just the nature of the beast. And anything that will give our guys more shuteye is a good thing.....yeah the DI guns are great weapons, but they require frequent maintenance (cleanings) to maintain the appropriate level of reliability.....and given that, between missions and maintenance on other equipment and vehicles, our guys are only getting 3 - 5 hours of rack time between 12 - 15 hour missions as it is....anything that will reduce the maintenance load is a welcome change.

What do you base that statement on?

Magazine in the magazine well, round chambered and dust cover closed. Yet somehow "sand" gets into the action and causes jams.
A few issues about piston systems. 1. Weight of the piston assembly out over the barrel negatively impacting what is currently a superbly balanced weapon. 2. The rearward and forward "slap" of the piston causing H&K to beef up the to barrel H-BAR profile exacerbating the issue of balance. 3. NineseveN is right on with the "degree" of improved reliability. Col. Cooper used to refer to it as Preoccupation with Insignificant Increments. There is a reason we round off PI to 3.14 instead of using 3.14159265, it's because everything after 3.14 is an insignificant increment.
