22lr Conversion in AR
Has anybody done the 22lr conversion? I've been looking at this set-up now for about a year and I'm close to buying it. But I have a few questions. http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ar22stcokitw.html Would it be worth it? Would it be accurate? Will it mess up my current barrel? Pros and Cons.... Any input is much appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 22lr Conversion in AR
Lead. Fouling.
no thanks.
maybe just shoot jacketed rounds (although at a higher cost) or buy a dedicated upper.

Re: 22lr Conversion in AR
Yea the dedicated upper was also in the back of my mind but then it would be cheaper to buy the 22 AR clone that everybody seems to be making now. I was just looking for a cheap alternative to a gun that I can barely afford to shoot anymore, well its hard to afford any ammo right now.

Re: 22lr Conversion in AR
Not a bad deal, although I would just buy from CMMG direct, but that's just me. The issue of lead fouling is minimal unless something is seriously dicked up in your rifle, as mojo said just a couple rounds of .223/5.56 every now and again and you should be GTG.
One of the biggest selling points for me (aside from the price of .22lr) is that CMMG's .22 mags can be fitted with a follower which reduces the capacity to 26 but will hold the bolt open when empty. Slightly reduced capacity means more practice with mag changes and the BHO (no not our CinC) makes for operation almost identical to that of a standard AR.Warning: I may not read responses to OP before posting

Re: 22lr Conversion in AR
My CMMG is great. I get to pull the trigger on my real carbine, and not pay for .223 ammo. I wouldn't use a dedicated upper unless it was free.

Re: 22lr Conversion in AR
I have the spikes tactical conversion and its great and i was very suprised how accurate conversions are. Well worth the $200ish they cost. Most conversions work great with the cheap federal bulk pack 22lr ammo sold at walmart which is copper plated.

Well thats great to know CDNN has had that kit for a while and thats the cheapest ive seen it since its release. So what you guys are telling me is that the CMMG kit is a good kit and not something im gonna pitch ove the hill after the first time out with it?

Re: 22lr Conversion in AR
I have one of the "M261" conversion kits (functionally similar to any other .22LR kit that swaps in the .22LR "BCG") and it uses the Black Dog "M261" hi-caps.
The only issues I have had are mag-related; load anything over, say 23rds, and it jams until the mag "loosens" up. Staying at 20rd loadings or less and it runs just fine. YMMV with the CMMG mags.
Personally, IMHO, if you are ALREADY an AR owner, these kinds of conversions make more financial sense than say a dedicated S&W M&P-15/22 or Umarex "Colt".
Although if S&W eventually makes an EXACT .22LR clone of the their 5.56 M&P-15 M4rgery -I'm arm-twisted to get in line!Last edited by nfafan; November 24th, 2009 at 12:42 AM.

$170 + penny shipping:

Extra mags are $19/ea, but currently out of stock.
I have a several conversion kits for various guns and this one is my favorite. It's the easiest to change in/out and eats pretty much any ammo fed to it.
