It wsn't real without pics, so FWIW, I finally got around to shooting a few.
I stuck the pics in a photobucket account rather than kill the digital forest here... Tried to add meaningful captions to explain the pics. http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y260/nfafan/SIG_522/ I think if you hold off 'til a funshow and fondle one yourself, you'll like it for what it is - that is if you like the .22LR mil-sims like the S&W MP22, GSG, etc. I knew this was as close as I'd ever get to a "big SIG", so I used my SIG-stash I'd been saving for the impending release date and grabbed one. If GSG surprises us with a .22LR STG44 anytime soon - I'm all tapped out and will be SOL. HTH |

Nice pics of the 522. I picked mine up yesterday evening and took it out this morning to the range. I put a 4X Burris scope on it that I had laying around with some new rings. I went to my local shooting range and set up at 50 yards. I brought 200 Remington golden HV and 50 CCI Mini Mags for ammo. I fired all the ammo that I had and there were zero malfunctions even when I mixed the two types of ammo in one clipload and fired at a very rapid rate. I loaded 25 rounds in the magazine each time.
Contrary to rumors by some on the forums this rifle is not made by GSG or Umarex it is made by SIG in the USA as indicated by stampings on the upper receiver, which is a heavy duty solid aluminum piece rather than a shell housing a complete operating bolt assembly like the GSG-5. It has a straight blowback action which is easy to strip down for cleaning. It took about four sight adjustments to get the scope zeroed in and then I was able get less than 1.5 " groups shooting offhand at 50 yards without any problems. I also own a GSG-5, a Walther G22 and an AMT 25-22 (Ruger 10/22 clone) and I think the Sig 522 is as good as any of them. I like the construction design of it a lot more than the GSG-5 or the Walther G22. It is easier to field strip and clean by a wide margin. A big advantage that it has over the GSG-5 and the Umarex Colt AR-22 is that it has a real hammer forged barrel vs the sleeve covered thin tube barrel that is used by the other two. It also has a bolt hold back button that is functional unlike the fake one on the Colt. The OP's pictures show the basic setup and assembly. I was a little upset that there were no sights of any type included and only one magazine but I pretty much expected it, and the price did not increase from where I expected it to be either. I had put money down on this rifle about 8 months ago and the final price was $459. I will be checking with Sig on Monday for some extra magazines and the BUIS set that is made for this rifle; it is the rotating barrel type diopter sight like the one made for the Sig 556. Overall, I like the rifle quite a lot and I think if the sight set is not too expensive, it will be a very nice plinker. |

Many boards have posts regarding the missing sights. As for SIGs reply to me when I moaned to their cust svc - "Dear Sir I am happy to hear you were able to get one of the first 522. They just started shipping at the end of October so you did get one of the first waves. The 522 is being released as optic ready. The original pictures that we posted were of our prototype model that featured both the mini red dot sight and our STL-900L. These were never intended to ship with the firearm. Both of those items retail at $215 and our suggested retail price of the firearm is only $572. We are doing our best to make this an affordable, fun way to shoot. We will have different models in the future that will have different options, such as fixed sights, rails etc..., but for our initial release we wanted to keep the firearm's price as low as we could. I am sorry for the inconvenience and I hope you enjoy your new rifle. Regards" I'm not done yet and will get back to him. The notion that they could'nt toss in a SIG-branded CHICOM-made $30.00-or-less-in-value red-dot is poor business, given that they are after a finite amount of disposable income out here for such toys and so should want to have their plinker heads and shoulders above Umarex's impending "HK-94/22". As for mags, I checked BDM's website and they do not yet have them posted on the site itself, but one would think they should probably have them. |
