I like the Tantal more than my 84S-1. It's 1/3 the price and shoots much cheaper ammo. The sidefolder of the Tantal is much better than the uncomfortable underfolder.

That said, if you must get a 5.56 AK, go for the SLR-106 from KVAR for around $700.

Al ... this reminds me. I found the thread on theakforum that talks about the issues that 5.56 AKs had. It seems like it was with the early production rifles. They didn't have ramps cut into the barrels. The lack of ramps caused feeding problems. I will try to remember to post the info for people who don't have an account over there (although, if you have an AK you should)

One idea: Red Jacket Firearms could probably make anything you want:

I had Will make me an AK-105 (in 5.45), it was really awesome. Great finish. He put a rail on it so I could attach a Kobra.

K-VAR.

SLR-106.

K-VAR has links to retailers on their website.

I dunno what they're selling for now but they just had a sale.

Thanks all. Yeah, the SLR-106 looks like what I'll be going with once I save up some cash (unfortunately got way too many other expenses to attend to first). I'm presuming the Norinco is pre-ban, thus pricey. I thought about a Tantal, but I want to be able to use non-corrosive, domestically-manufactured ammo. Now they need to make one of these in 6.8 SPC.

I am not sure how much longer KVAR is going to have that kind of pricing, so better hurry up. 1 out of 3 106 models is sold out already. Yes, the Norinco is pre-ban and was imported for only 1 year (1989). If it weren't for its rarity, I'd have sold it a while ago.

You can get non-corrosive 5.45x39 on aimsurplus.com at $168.75 + shipping for 750 rounds.

you might want to take a look at a golani (galil type) chambered in .223. they can be had for under $600 now. some of the older ones had issues so you might want to fire it if you go with an older one. new ones seem to be ok. i had feeding issues with mine but just needed the feed ramp polished and it runs good now.

I have STG-2003C in .223 NATO. It is an AK variant based on the shortlived East German design. Link to website that has info.
