I only have a Winnie 94 Wrangler in 44. mag. I hope you don't mind if I chime in. I did think about a .38/.357 combo but thought that the .44 mag would be a better deer choice. It is my "back-up" rifle or loaner to visitng friends who need a gun to hunt.

I wanted a Winchester but like the Marlins too.

My only slight objection is that the stroke of the lever is such that you have to remove the butt from your shoulder and break the site plane between shots.

The Winchester 94 has a lot longer lever stroke, and requires more force to cycle than the Marlin 1894 lever. The .44 is a great choice for deer, have taken five nice ones to date with my Ruger 96/44 carbine.

With practice, a lever action can be cycled very quickly, especially in pistol calibers, without taking it from the shoulder. I can maintain a good picture on my sights when cycling the action on mine.

I have no experience with the Wincheters, but my Marlin allows me to keep it on my shoulder while operating the lever.
