Yeah like posted, if your budget is sub $500 get an AK. You wont get a good AR for anywhere close to Under $500.

Welcome to the forum.

I may have missed it, but will this be your first rifle?
If so, you may also wish to consider a semi-auto .22LR as a starting point.
Learn the basics of shooting. Properly and inexpensively. Lots of people dismiss the .22 as a "kid's gun", but everyone should have at least one.

You can pick up a cheap Mossberg Plinkster for around $100, or the wildly popular Ruger 10/22 for what, $260-$275? Ammo will only run you about $15-$20 for 500 rounds.

You can always keep saving up for the AR-15. Read and learn about them along the way, that way you'll be able to make a better decision on exactly what you want. You really DO need to know what you want to use it for to make the right decision, as the options are nearly limitless. No sense wasting money on things you don't need or want.

Aside from waiting, you could go the AK-47 route as mentioned. Should have no trouble finding one for $400 or less.

Good luck.

He's not going to be able to do that - unless the PSP has changed its opinion on stripped lowers being pistols - thus he'd need to be 21.

Also, at this point, i'm not even sure he could buy a complete AR at a shop that requires the pistol paperwork to be filled out because of the PSP.

Not every store is doing that bullshit..... I'd call, play dumb, and ask.

I bought a stripped lower in PA last October and I am from out of state.

A lot has changed from October. That was when a receiver was treated like a receiver and not a pistol.
