You'll find tight WASR butts 99% of the time. They never put them together with the intention of removing the butt.
Alternately slap it hard on either side at the extreme end, and add an occasional slap along the top and bottom edges. Wrap the butt in a towel and use a rubber mallet. You will eventually dislodge it enough so as to maybe insert a wide-tip screwdriver and pry it away from the recvr. See "Fig 2" in the linked website; http://www.ultimak.com/AKStockR&R.htm If you plan on sanding and refinishing the wood and re-installing: make sure you clean up/grind-down the wood where it inserts into the revcr so that it can be more easily removed the next go-around. |

WASR wood buttstocks can be a bitch to get out. Other than that, you should be ok with interchangeability.
It may however be easier for you to just refinish your existing wood. The G stocks will likely be heavily lacquered, which you'll have to strip and sand out any imperfections, while the WASR wood is raw and unfinished. Sand it, clean it, dye or stain it and use Minwax wipe-on poly finish and it will turn out quite nicely.

removing the buttstock is best done with a bent steel rod and a mallet. you need a piece of steel rod about 3/4" diameter about 10" long and bent at the midpoint to about 30* (improvise). remove the dust cover, recoil spring and bolt/carrier, and fire control group. grab the front trunion in a vise (if you have one) or clamp the trunion to the kitchen table with gun on it's side, insert bent rod in place of receiver internals, push it up against the front end of the buttstock, and whack with mallet of large hammer till it comes out.

There is a color of minwax with a semi gloss finish that I used on my WASR10 that was perfect. It matched exactly the color of the bayonet handle and made the gun look great!
I sanded and applied a coat. Overnight dry. the next day I sanded lightly and applied the second coat. Durable, nice semi gloss sheen, and EASY. The stock and bayonet handle blend the gun together into a neat looking piece. I am sorry I don't have the color name as I gave the can to a friend to do his gun. But if you are interested all you have to do is color match. It is a reddish wood color. I know this is NOT on point to your question but just thought I would throw it in. Hope you don't mind.

Thanks. I think I am going to mix a little minwax gunstock with minwax red mahogoney to match the pistol grip. See how that goes then maybe I can go darker or lighter depending on how it looks.

Holy crap.
If I'm not forced to sell my WASR to eat, I had considered switching to black polymer furniture at some point, but it sounds like it would be easier to just buy another AK with the black furniture already on it! ![]() Hope your project turns out well. Please post some photos when completed!

I got all my parts finally yesterday but after looking at the parts I am missing that metal piece that fits into the upper handguard. Does anyone know what that piece is called and where I can get one fairly cheap? Or if I do not even need this piece? Other wise the parts look great and cant wait to get to work on them tonight!
