AK vs. AR which do you prefer and why.

Looks like i'm going against the trend here, i prefer the AK....I've shot both however am more accurate with the AK platform.

I replied AR because that is what I have most of my training with. I had to think about it a little bit and almost "over thought" the question. Example: For home defense with parts, cleaning equipment etc are readily available, then the AR hands down.

If I was told I had to go visit another planet and I could choose which weapon to take with me, an AK everytime.

AR for me, that's not saying the AK isn't a fine weapon though.

This is a dumb question. "Real" gun nuts would have at least one of each and then you can always switch.

It is to close to choose just one. I love both platforms for different reasons. I will say that people who think that the AK is not accurate really don't know what they are talking about, and they throw around the term accuracy in a way that has no validity.

I can shoot 1.5-2" groups at 100yds and 2-3" groups at 200yds with no problem using a T1 with a 4MOA dot. In my eyes that is more than accurate enough for a battlefield rifle, especially considering that the ammo used is far from match grade quality.... If you know how to mitigate the short sight radius of the AK, you can greatly improve the accuracy of the platform.

Granted you are not going to be able to shoot dime sized groups with it because of the ammo, but at the end of the day who cares when your target is the size of a human?... I have a buddy of mine who consistently out shoots AR guys in high power with his Vepr.

I'm guessing the people who chose AR's have never had to rely on one in a real life combat senario. They look cool, and their fun to shoot on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but thats about the extent.

That's where I started, I like my AR and I'm sure if I had more time/training I would like it just as much. As D90king pointed out if you can get past the AK sights its "accurate enough". I'm not shooting a dime sized group but I can do minute of bad guy with my RPK just fine.

Actually I think at least one military member has responded with their preference for the AR in this thread. Nice try, though.
