I plan to use a front vert grip on mine - not sure which one yet.
Its the opposite... The rail seem high to me, I think your optics if you are using a T1 etc will be too high to have the front post in play. I think there is probably an inch or so difference in height between a Ultimake which replaces the gas tube (the UM also has a lower profile than a gas tube). It looks like this rails height is slightly above the height of where the tradition top hand guard would be. Look at the Ultimak below and it will give you an idea of what I am talking about.... Look at the rear leaf and you will see that if the optic sits much higher you wont be able to see it in the glass...

Now picture the optic sitting above the top of the handguard..

Here is a pic of the rail... Click on the pic after you click the link of it installed and you get a sense of what I was seeing installed. Who knows I could be wrong....but I doubt it.

Enjoy your new rifle, you wont be disappointed. My buddy just stopped by and showed me his new one with the rail. I did find the railed rifle to be a little muzzle heavy...
I'm curious to see the difference between the SGL21-66 and my Yugo Underfolder. I still keep going back and forth thinking, "Do I really need 2 AK's?"

First, the rail made the forward grip a bit wider and you could feel the difference in its handling. Second it did make the rifle a bit muzzle heavy. I am not sure if it will balance better with a loaded mag. If adding optics (which I would think you would, hence the rail) I think you will want a VFG so that you can keep proper rearward pressure.

Also Bulgarian waffle 10's will need to be worked in or sanded for proper fit. This is common and not a big deal, but take the time to get it dialed in or it will greatly impact reload times.

A VERY nice rifle for the money, and I am sure that all that bought them will be very happy with their purchase. You got a chance to buy a very rare factory built Russian AK!

Who makes these heat shields you speak of?

Also what's an "ideal" optic for an AK?

I enjoy the Eotech on my AR, but is there something better for this new beast of a rifle? T-1 the way to go with these?

Thanks everybody for posting the deals, my new 1911 fund hates you all!

Not sure what the "ideal" optic is, but most users have T-1 or the H-1 I believe. I don't remember seeing many Eotechs on AKs at all, either aimpoints or clones.

Just picked up my rifle!! She's a beauty, I'm extremely happy. Fit and finish are awesome, plum furniture is sweeeeeet. I was going to name her Natalya, but when I saw her I had to change it to Nikita because she is just a dirty dirty whore in the best way ever. I love her. I cant wait to shoot her. I am going to attempt a Photobucket account later so I can post pics!

Technically you don't need an account. I just use http://imageshack.us/

You can just upload your pic then copy the "direct link" box and paste it in here as an image.

Photobucket is worth the account setup. Then you can keep an inventory of the images you upload, and ultimate control over them. Don't want them up any more? Delete it from your account or move them and it breaks the link.

Sign up. It's worth it.

Calm down, calm down, I'm getting there!! I want to warn you though that this will be my first attempt so the pics won't win any prizes, but you should get the general idea. I was going to take them last night but after emptying all my ammo onto the floor and rolling around in it while spooning Nikita I fell asleep. ASAP.
