M1 Carbine

Greetings,

I have always wanted an M1 carbine since the first WWII movie I ever saw on the TV at home - Tube type, B&W, No remote, Rotary dials, Got 4 stations, Sat on 4 wheel cart that could be moved around so it could be seen while eating supper in the kitchen. Can you guess my age now ?

So, M1 carbine. Auto-Ordnance produces two types. One with all wood stock and one with the metal hand guard.

I have always liked the look of the metal hand guard over the all wood. As I know very little about the weapon …….

o Are there any pros or cons over all wood or the metal hand guard - or just get what I like the looks of ?
o Is Impactguns a good place to purchase or is there shop that is preferred by PAFOA ?
o Or should I totally shop by price ?

For that kind of money, I'd look at the CMP carbine sales and get an original one. All of the Inlands sold out at $495. I'm sure the Underwoods will go for more since they were fewer of them made...and based on the demand of how fast the Inland's went.

While the CMP Carbines would be the real deal. Auto-Ordinance atleast makes theirs to be compatible with USGI Parts, unlike some other aftermarket M1 Carbines.

Get a real one.

My best guess is the metal HG's will probably get hot during rapid fire.

I would opt for the wood handguard, more original looking.

If you are going to deal with Impact Guns, I have visited their Boise, ID store and talked with them at length. I was impressed with the store and how I saw them treat customers. Their main store (and I think where the internet sales are from) is Ogden, UT. I had a friend order a Walther from them (I did the transfer) and he was very satisfied with his dealings with them.

I agree with the CMP. You are not only getting a good firearm but a piece of history too.
You may want to check out the carbine forum at the cmp site since you say you don't have much of experience with them. Lots of nice folks over there.

+1 on the CMP, although I may be a little biased. My CMP carbine just arrived this morning and I am definitely happy with it. For the price it was a good buy, plus, I have my own piece of US history (and Italian too but I'm Italian so it's ok). The only problem that you will encounter is that because of the release of the CMP carbines, carbine accessories have increased a bit in price.

This may not be the proper place to add this reply, but, I bought my M1 carbine from the DCM in 1963. Quality Hardware manufacture, walnut stocks, 100% complete with sling, magaazine, and oiler.
Beautiful rifle and if I can ever figure out how to put on photos I will puit this rifle on.
Set me back $15.00 + shipping. Ammo was $.01 per round. I bought a couple of 900 round "Spam" cans. I just shot this rifle for the first time last week. What a blast.
My thought, buy the real deal. The prices have been creeping up even before the selling by the CMP. prices on the real ones will increase. The clones will always be just another clone.

avoid the kahr karbines. from what i've seen on several forums, they seem to be quite problematic. there was even a story of an out of battery discharge as a result of a head space issue....on a brand new gun.

stick with usgi guns.

There is only one M-1 and thats the one with all the stories but cant talk. Want a carbine to play with get a marlin camp9 or 45 to get your carbine feelings out and a m-1 to talk to.
