SKS any day. Look around, prices are going up. Check your local gun shops. 7.62x39 ammo is still readily available, and a blast to shoot. I've seen them as high as $400, that's crazy. You can find them for half that if you look.

Been awhile since I priced them in store but there are a few on the for sale forum for 200-225 bucks. Not to mention that anything and I mean anything is better than a highpoint. I'd wipe my ass with the money before spending it on a highpoint.

You're entitled to your opinion.... I would agree that the SKS is a better choice, if you can have only one, because of the readily available, reasonably powerful, and affordable ammo.

I own an SKS, and have owned a Hi Point (pistol), and a friend of mine has the carbine in 9mm. I don't understand some people's visceral reaction to HP guns. Ugly? Yes. Cheap? Yes. Reliable? Yes. Accurate? Enough.

I'm blessed to be able to buy nicer guns now than I could a few years ago when I had the Hi Point. I've added H&K, S&W, Kahr, etc. to my collection, but have been looking for a good deal on a used Hi Point, just to throw in the truck. They tend to go bang when you ask it of them, and have decent accuracy.

Did I mention that gun snobs annoy me? I love oooing and aaahhing over $2K safe queens, but really, if you need an American made gun, for $2-300 with a lifetime warranty, buy the Hi Point, if for no other reason than to make the gun snobs cranky.

IMHO SKS is the way to go, although my only account of HP fire arms is that a friend of mine had one in 9mm. It was inaccurate and could not take a beating like an SKS could

They actually shoot quite tight.....and mine ran flawlessly after spending a week in used kitty litter. Much of internet wisdom isn't worth cat pee.

Having owned both a Hi-Point carbine, and an SKS, I feel qualified to say that if you choose the Hi-Point over the SKS, I will ban you.

No, not really... the decision is ultimately yours. It depends on what you really want.

If you want a carbine that shoots fairly expensive ammo, and is a pain in the ass to take apart to clean, yet is ugly-cool, and accurate, buy the Hi-Point.

If you want a real firearm, buy the SKS.

I had a love/hate relationship with my carbine. When I got my SKS, I forgot about the carbine.
I then sold the carbine to fund my AR-15.
I don't shoot the SKS as much now, but it is far from forgotten.
I wish I had bought an SKS years ago. GREAT rifles for the money.

I like my rifles in rifle calibers and my pistols in pistol calibers. I would go with the SKS based on power.

The .40 S&W carbine might be a tad quicker to reload as compared to SKS strippers....but neither are super fast to reload, and neither are "hi capacity".

The .40 has a advantage in point blank up close work, but we used 20" A2 rifles for years with no problems.

I just have a hard time buying a carbine that fires a pistol round, when there are many fine carbines out there with more power.

If my carry handgun was a Beretta 92, I might go with the Storm 9mm carbine that took the same magazines. But since I always carried the Glock or M&P I stick with the M4 for greater capacity and more power.

All in all....Id go with the SKS hands down between the two.

BUT...you miss the HiPoint don't you?
To the OP, get the SKS first. It was used as a battle rifle, albeit many years ago, but still a battle rifle. You can't go wrong. With that said, I own both an SKS and a HiPoint 9mm carbine, and have a fun time shooting both.
