The 6.8 does appear to best the 5.56 in laboratory testing but whether it is a step change in improvement to move the *big Army* to spend gazillions of dollars on weapons upgrades and ammunition is another matter.

The word I hear is "not very likely". If that is the case, it will never be produced in sufficient quantities and the price point of the ammo and uppers will remain high.

The heavy 75 gr TAP and 77 gr Mod 1 greatly extends terminal performance at distances that far exceed M193 FMJ.

My advice is to buy a 5.56 rifle and if the 6.8 is adopted, then get an upper and relegate 5.56 for training and practice due to it's lower overall cost.

I don't mean to divert the topic. But see here for a video of two armchair commando comparing the M-16 (or AR-15) with its 5.56x45 vs. the AK-47's 7.62x39 round. Note the cool slow motion barrel whip action by the AK. Also, check out the 7.62 Russian round going through an 8" block of wood.

These two are formidable but seems like the 7.62 Russian round tends to turn cover into concealment. Scary indeed.

On the side note, it would be cool to incorporate the Swedish Mauser round 6.5x55 into the combat rifle platform. It is proven moose slayer, it has relatively low recoil and it has manufacturing and tooling needed already in place if the Army say "go". Why spend money on this 6.8 stuff. R&D cost is high and people gonna pay through the roof initially for them new round. Just my 3 plain cents.
