You're going to get good and bad on this one. Check out the CMP, Carbines are going up for sale soon. They're all mixmasters, buy one and have fun.

Unless you're leaving it as a safe queen, I'd stay away solely on the fact that the gun is too damn expensive too shoot and the ammo offers little bang for the buck (pun intended). Plus, I think they're overpriced. I remeber when I could get Korean war era versions at gun shows for $150 just 10 years ago!

If you are looking for a commercial knock-off, Plainfield makes one that is interchangeable with the USGI carbine. For the money, though, the soon-to-be offered carbines from CMP should be what you are looking for. A bit of history but not such that they retain any significant historical value.

RE: Auto Ordinance M1 Carbine.
Purchased mine in January 07. Be advised there is no windage adjustment for this rifle. My Carbine shoots ' High and Right' at any distance to target. Shipped mine back to Auto Ordinance that they may correct. Awaiting return of firearm. Will post again with results. |

I held one at Tanners and it looked as if it was put together on Friday at 4.55 PM by some a hole. Stuff was crooked and loose. I decided not to buy one then.

My old Plainfield is a nice rifle - bought it back in '76. Back then, they were still using some left-over USGI parts though most were commercially made at that point. I think my front sight, hammer and one other part are original USGI.
As I mentioned above, if you are looking for a shooter, consider CMP when they start selling the returned carbines at the end of April. For about $500 you'll get a nice piece of histroy that's been fully checked by an armorer. I'm going to order one to carry with me here on our property - and keep my nearly-original National Postal Meter carbine safe in the house.

give me second and i can link you to a thread reguarding a karbine that suffered an OOB discharge(due to a short chamber).....less than 15rds into it's ''life''.
for every one person that has good things to say about them, there's 2 or 3 more with bad news. unless you get a mint example of a ww2 ''version''...I.E one that has not had an arsenal overhaul after the war, you have no worry of wearing one out. and as stated earlier in this thread, they are not really that fun to shoot for as much as you pay for the ammo. it's like shooting a rather expensive .22lr, that just has a louder/snappier report.
