Default Ak owners help me!!

I was looking at pics of some of the members AK's and I want one badly. So I'm going to treat myself for my 35th B-day. My question is with a 4 to 5 hundred dollar budget can I get one? If so will it be a good one at that price? I don't have much knowledge on the AK so any help is much appreciated.

yeah, with that id say you can get a pretty nice one, for 500 range you can get a standard wood framed one made in russia, with a milled reciever but there goes your whole budget. Iv shot milled and stamped recievers and they function absolutly the same, except milled is more expensive. You can get a Romanian for around $325 and still have some cash for some goodies like a new front handguard rail for a vertical grip and red dot.

Since you don't presently support any comblock weapons, your initial outlay will cost more than just the gun. The most common chamberings are (most to least common) are: 7.62x39, 5.45x39, .223 Remington and .308 Winchester. Of all these, only the first two are original Russian military chamberings. The 7.62x39 is by far the most common, the 308 is the least common. The 5.45 is the most recent development, but some folks have concerns about ammunition supply. Right now 5.45x39 is a little more plentiful than 7.62x39, but 7.62x39 is made here in the US.

So, budget a case of ammunition (about $150), maybe stripper clips. If you opt for stripper clips, be certain to get at least one (better-two or three) magazine charger guides. (Tapco - desert outdoors - blackwarriorus) This is the secret for fast reloads, as you may already know from your AR-15. Click here to see the latest discussion on where to get the best price on 7.62x39.

This leaves about $300 for your AK, putting a WASR-10 within reach. If you're more of a purist and want something a little closer to an AK as far as appearance, look for a Romanian SAR-1. If you want the full deal (bayonet lug, flash hider, etc) you'll need to look at a domestic AK make, which will drive the price up. To view more discussion regarding AK asthetics, click here.

Looks like you had one at one time...what happened here?

OT: How do you like your M6 scout? I was considering one in .22LR for my kids.

I was at Dunhams in DuBois PA over the weekend, they had the "hi-cap" WASR's for $450. The one we looked at was fairly straight. But, here is the deal. You figure $450+tax=$477. My Lancaster was just over $500 shipped to my FFL. For the extra $30 you are getting a superior weapon IMO.
Lifetime warranty & excellent customer service
Gun kote finish vs plain parkerizing
Refinished wood vs unfinished wood

The choice is easy. So now your asking where to get a Lancaster built AKM right? Atlanticfirearms.com is one place (where I got mine). If your on some of the big AK forums he will give you a small discount.

I did own a used AK many moons ago and did not own it long at all(maybe a week before I sold it to a friend to buy an M1A socom 16 when they first came out) So I never really got to know the gun and I certainly had no Idea of all the manufacturers and calibers the AK has to offer as I'm sure you figured out I prefer US battlerifles. So your post was very helpfull. As far as the M6 scout goes I have just purchased a scope mount and red dot for it but have yet to try it. It will be a great gun for your kids.

If you don't mind buying off the net. Check here......

http://www.ak47.net/forums/forum.html?b=7&f=122

Ammo at AIM Surplus $149.99

They always have the best price, and are in Ohio, so not bad shipping.

You probably want a SAR1 like Rifleman said. They came with all the standard crap where as most WASR10s didn't, but many have been updated with the preban parts.

Is this the going retail price for a WASR?? I could see $350, but $450? That *is* steep, or things are changing very fast.

Well considering I was just looking through the EE or at Arfcom and saw a SAR1 for $450 I would believe it. Seems like prices of guns are going up as the ammo does.

Yikes! $450 for a WASR? Anything over $375 is overpricing. Classic Pistol(local range), last time i was there, had a very nice WASR for $350. It came with a bayo and 1 30 round mag. Standard wood furniture. WASR's are accurate for the ak model, i have never had a jam/problem with mine. Very solid and reliable. They do not have that sports car finish to them. They were built for the job, not the looks.
However, With a few coats of stain, Minwax polyurethane for the stock, and some Duracoat for the metal finish............. ill post pics when im done.
