Default Alternatives to the Stock Sights of the Marlin 39a??

As my vision has gotten progressively worse as I get older, I am now considering alternatives to the stock sights on my firearms.

As the .22 is the only firearm i would likey shoot beyond 25 yards I am looking at either peep sights or a rifle scope.

As I am not likely to spend more than $100.00 on either. I would like some recommendations on my options.

I have considered the Lyman, Ghost Ring, and the Williams peep. Though I'm partial to the Williams given its ease of installation, I'd like to hear your opinions of them.

Similarly, I reasearched some of the less expensive optics offered by Simmons and Bushnell. I'd prefer a 3X9 32 or 3X9 33 with an adjustable objective lens-- any praise or criticism for the offerings of either.

I'm sure that some out there have preferences for the higher-end optics offered by Zeiss, Nikon or Leupold. Quite frankly my target shooting and plinking needs don't require such an investment.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Stay well.

I would go with the scope, peep sights only make temporary fix for old eyes. My 39a has had a 4X Burris on it for more years than it had irons only.

elston: I just turned 61 yesterday, and both my .22 rifles are scoped using
1" Weaver steel tip-off mounts (for the grooved receivers on most .22's) that are see-through, allowing you to use the sights when practical.

I used this set up for years on my .22 Marlin Model 25 bolt action for squirrels, and I found I liked an old 4x Tasco deer scope in the 1" Weaver mounts. I liked the 4x because it gave me a great, clear field of view, and
I did not have to worry about being in the wrong magnification for a particular shot.

Both my old Marlins now have near identical 3 x 9 Simmons deer scopes now, as I found they are great for my purposes if left at 6x. If I really feel the need, I can go either lower or higher.

I tried peep sights and found them little help. I recommend the scope.

I have a Marble tang sight on mine. my eyes are 67 years old. The marble is adjustable for windage and elevation. The rifle wil have to be drilled and tapped however.
This setup is perfect for the .22 Lever Gun matches. ( no scopes allowed). This setup is also more asthetic looking then a scope or the Williams sight.

Thank you all for you thoughtful responses.

I will likely go with dogngun's suggestion and get a 3x9 in either 33 or 40 with an adjustable objective. I still have to decide which particular make and model.

Thanks again for all your help.

Stay well.
