Default Cooling down a rifle barrel?

Well, I went with the new AR to the range, cooked off a stack of M193 ammo... well, after 100 rounds or so, the barrel was HOT.

After another 50 or so rounds, it was closing time for the range... but the barrel felt hot enough to melt the case!

How do you cool off a rifle barrel? I presume just pouring water is a good way to warp it...

Thanks!

Pick yourself up a digital infrared thermometer and check out the temp again (at the range). I'm willing to bet it's not much hotter than the hood of your car on a sunny 90 degree day, but i could be wrong. I'll have to try it out. I got my IR Therm at Radio shack (kinda handy to have). I used it to set the temp of my hot water at the faucet in my home, check the temp of hot air coming from the furnace, set the temp of my freezer and refridge, and a bunch of other things.
IR gives you instant surface temp readings without touching the item.

I usually just let my rifle sit. Then again I don't cook off 100 rounds real pronto and just get ready to send a bunch more down the pipe. I would suggest that you spend a little more time on marksmanship and not quite so much yanking the trigger, lol. Naw, there's nothing wrong with sending some rounds downrange, but I just can't afford to be playing around like that with hundreds of rounds. I personally am about precision, so I just fire a few, let it cool off, fire a few more, etc.

First time with my own AR-15. It was bound to happen. Heheheh. Most plinking I do is with 22lr... it just felt sooo good to rattle off a 30 round mag at relatively fast ROF.

The precision work is what the 75 grain ammo is for... this was the "OMG AR!" 5.56 a'splosion.

Which was followed by "wow, that thing is HOT!"
