Default Re: AK vs SKS vs M1 Carbine vs 9mm carbine

I'm kind of partial to the SKS for some reason. I've got the common Yugo 59/66 that everyone is selling now days. Nice rifle but I do not like the grenade launcher and sight on it. To me it clutters up the lines. Just got the latest issue of Shotgun News and I.O. Inc. has Romanian SKS's. Model 56 to be exact. These do not have the launcher parts on them and look pretty good in the picture. Same as the Chinese and Yugo 59's. Prices are 220 for good/very good, 250 for excellent. They do not have them on their website right now or I would post a link.

Then again, from an investment point of view, you will probably be able to buy an SKS years into the future for a decent price. This may not be the case with an AK type rifle or the Hi-Point. I imagine that IF another AWB happens the price of an AK will skyrocket from both FFL's and private sellers. Might be a good idea to invest in an AK now.

Hell, go to Dunham's when they have their next sale, (probably this weekend), and buy a WASR and a Hi-Point. I bought my WASR10 there for $210 on sale, bought my WASR2 there on sale for $210, and bought one of my Hi-Points (9mm) there on sale for $160. You will still be under your $400 limit for two guns. The WASR's were low-caps but thats nothing that a Dremel and a few trigger parts cant take care of.

HA! If they were that price now I'd go buy 10 of 'em.

I'd say go for the AK. You can buy a SAR-1 or a WASR-10 (both Romanian) for $300-$350, spend a little more on 5 or so 30rnd mags and you're good to go. They're reliable and accurate enough for most with iron sights. I have a SKS and it never goes to the range...the AK always goes before it does. Detachable SKS mags are not very good unless you have a Chinese SKS made for using AK mags. The M1 is out because of price, as already mentioned, and 9mm carbines are fun for a while but you can shoot an AK out to 300yds no problem. The 9mm carbine is good out to 100yds or maybe 150yds. I've had two and sold both. Unless you have a subgun with a fun switch, you'll get bored with it pretty quickly.

Spend more than what you are planning to spend and get a quality AK that will last you forever.

End of story.
